– Silverbullet restrict East Bank U23 in EBDCA-Ryan Dookie Memorial T/20
(Kaieteur Sports) – After a rain-induced hiatus, the Ryan Dookie Memorial T20 Cricket Competition roared back to life over the weekend, serving up drama, power-hitting, and fierce bowling duels as Silverbullet Cricket Club and Sandpipers Sports Club registered hard-fought victories in front of an energized crowd at the Farm Community Centre ground.
Sunday’s early encounter saw Silverbullet Cricket Club edge past the East Bank Cricket Association Under-23 side in a closely contested battle that went down to the wire.
Opting to bat first on a freshly hardened track, Silverbullet built a solid platform, led by a composed and classy knock from Ridge Rajaram, who anchored the innings with a top score of 41 runs, laced with five crisp boundaries and two towering sixes. He was ably supported by Devon Paul, who chipped in with a brisk 28, guiding the team to a competitive 103 all out in their 20 overs.
Despite the modest total, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, Asif Roberts produced a sensational spell of fast bowling for East Bank U23s, returning dream figures of 4-8, tearing through the middle order and keeping Silverbullet under six runs an over.
Chasing 104, East Bank U23 showed signs of fight, with Deonarine Dindial digging in for a gritty 42 (5×4, 1×6), and Sayyad Lakeram contributing 19, but the chase faltered under pressure. Tight bowling from Paul Alexander (3-16) and N. Bhagwadin (2-15) applied the squeeze in the death overs, eventually bowling out the U23 side for 96-6, falling agonizingly short by 9 runs.
In the evening clash, Clint Jones lit up the ground with a thunderous half-century to lead Sandpipers Sports Club to a commanding 27-run win over Herstelling CTI.
Jones’ innings was a masterclass in timing and acceleration. Starting cautiously, he found his rhythm mid-way, launching five boundaries and four towering sixes in a scintillating 64-run performance. Irfan Ali also chipped in with a valuable 24, pushing Sandpipers to a robust 141 all out in 19.5 overs.
Herstelling CTI, in response, never quite found momentum. While Jeremiah Hohenkick (28) and R. Kissoon (19) showed promise, their efforts weren’t enough against a disciplined Sandpipers bowling attack. Ali, having impressed with the bat, returned to rip through the middle order with a game-changing spell of 4-10, sealing the win and boosting Sandpipers’ standing in the tournament.
With last Saturday’s scheduled fixtures washed out due to a damp outfield, Sunday’s double-header provided a crucial opportunity for teams to rack up points as the competition barrels toward its knockout stages. The intensity is rising, and with more matches lined up this coming Saturday and Sunday.
