(Kaieteur News) – Three days after turning himself over to the police, 28-year-old Damion Morgan, the suspect in the shooting of former girlfriend, 27-year-old Vasanti Gordon, was remanded to prison for attempting to end her life.
Morgan stood before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, on Thursday for the offence of attempting to commit murder, contrary to Section 103 (g) of the Criminal Law (Offenses) Act, Chapter 8:01.
It is alleged that on April 11, 2026, at Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, he discharged a loaded firearm with the intent to commit murder on Gordon.
He was not required to plea to the indictable charge.
The police prosecutor informed the magistrate that the prospection’s file is still incomplete, awaiting further legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.
Objecting to bail, the prosecution said Morgan, of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, East Canje Berbice, is no stranger to the court, as he has an ongoing robbery under arms matter before court. The prosecution also emphasised the seriousness of the offence and the dangerous weapon (gun) used in the commissioning of the crime. It was also stated that after shooting the woman, Morgan fled the scene and went into hiding. The prosecution also objected to bail on the basis that the accused is a flight-risk.
Stacy Giddings, who appeared as counsel for the accused, requested bail. She pointed out that Morgan has turned his life around, moving from a taxi driver to securing a more meaningful employment in the gold mining industry. Giddings acknowledged her client’s other court case, but reasoned that it is not similar in nature to his most active matter. To strengthen her bail appeal, she pointed out that Morgan is consistent with his obligations regarding the other court case, and would attend this new matter with the same level of commitment.
In 2022, Morgan and two other males were arrested for their involvement in a $50 million robbery committed at the Region Six’s Regional Democratic Council (RDC) building in New Amsterdam, Berbice. They were each released on $500,000 bail, and that matter is currently pending.
Concluding her application, Giddings noted that no wanted bulletin was issued for Morgan, as she sought to discard the notion that her client was on the run. She added that it was Morgan who took it upon himself to turn himself over to the police, as she asked the court to grant him reasonable bail.
Bail was refused, and Morgan was remanded to prison, awaiting the outcome of the case, which continues on May 14, 2026.
Magistrate Matthias denied bail due to the gravity of the crime, and on the fact that Morgan failed to surrender himself to the police on the same day.
Gordon, the injured woman, had told investigators that Morgan approached her car with a gun while she was parked in front of her home. He reportedly struck her to her head with same, and fired several shots at her right leg and thigh.
On Monday, Morgan turned himself in at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam.
