President Irfaan Ali, along with Elton Dharry and Salim KAssim, joined by Ministers of Government and GBBOC officials.
Kaieteur Sports – History beckons tonight in Guyana as Elton Dharry steps into the ring to face Tanzania’s Salmin Kassim for the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Super Bantamweight World Title, in what promises to be a defining moment for local boxing.
The bout is set to be the first male world title fight ever staged on Guyanese soil, and the first world championship contest overall since Shondell Alfred defeated Corinne DeGroot for the WIBA Bantamweight crown at the Princess Hotel back in 2009. Tonight’s clash, therefore, carries both historic weight and national expectation.
For Dharry, nicknamed “The Bully,” the opportunity is not just about claiming the title, it is about etching his name alongside some of Guyana’s greatest boxing icons.
Victory would see him join the ranks of the late Andrew Lewis, Wayne Braithwaite, Vivian Harris, and Gary Sinclair, among others, as fighters who have all delivered world titles to Guyana.

President Irfaan Ali shares a light moment with Elton Dharry and Salim Kassim ahead of their IBO Super Bantamweight title fight.
This marks Dharry’s second shot at a world crown. His previous attempt came against Australian Andrew Moloney for the WBA Super Flyweight title, a contest that ended controversially and remains a point of debate among boxing followers when assessing Dharry’s career.
Now 40, Dharry enters the ring as a seasoned and battle-tested campaigner. He boasts a professional record of 30 wins, including 17 knockouts, against six losses, reflecting both durability and punching power.
More importantly, he comes into tonight’s showdown riding a wave of momentum, having picked up a convincing unanimous decision victory over Roger Saldana in his last outing at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
That win extended his current streak to six consecutive victories, a run that has seen him capture both the WBC International Super Flyweight title and the WBA Super Flyweight Gold belt, further solidifying his credentials as a legitimate world title contender.
Standing in his path, however, is a young and hungry challenger in Kassim. At just 22 years old, the Tanzanian remains unbeaten in 12 professional fights, compiling a record of 10 wins and two draws.
Kassim arrives brimming with confidence following a second-round knockout victory in his most recent bout in December, and will be eager to spoil the homecoming celebration.
While the spotlight will firmly rest on the main event, the evening’s action begins with an exciting amateur segment from 6:00 pm, curated by the Guyana Boxing Association.
The undercard is expected to highlight the depth of emerging talent within the local boxing scene.
Among the featured matchups, Richard Da Silva takes on Imotex Vanderstoop, while Travolta Harris faces Junior Madray in what promises to be an intense contest.
Tofina Barker will battle Akela Vancooten in a bout showcasing the growth of women’s boxing locally, and Jofes Jackson meets Oasis Prince to close out the amateur lineup.
