Kaieteur Sports – Former West Indies legendary pacer Sir Curtly Ambrose recently bowled a bouncer directed towards Cricket West Indies (CWI) and this season’s revised ongoing West Indies 4-Day Championships.
Sir Curtly called out the CWI in relation to this year’s West Indies Championships during a recent interview on the Mason and Guest show.
Arguably one of the most decorated Test pacers in all of cricket, Sir Ambrose hit out at the CWI for hosting a poor regional 4-Day tournament, which is a result of the ongoing financial moves which has somewhat forced a scale back in terms of the logistical direction of hosting tournaments.
Sir Curtley further lashed out at the one dimensional format which features three rounds of the same teams playing each other, stating that West Indies cricket needs to do better than that. As a true competitor during and after his playing days, the ex-speedster bashed this season’s 4-day campaign for its lack of competitive development as compared to the regular system.
After the Trinidad and Leewards match was abandoned in the second round due to the bad nature of the pitch, the former pacer believed that match should have been called off earlier.
He added that no one listens to the people that have a more controlled understanding of certain issues, adding that the pitch had not seen any cricket action in over a year, which further emphasized on the lackluster structure of West Indies cricket currently.
Meanwhile, former CWI Director Billy Heaven, also speaking with Mason on his show, says CWI is close to insolvency which is a huge cause for concern.
He believed that if CWI doesn’t get a grip on their finances, then the shape of cricket in the Caribbean could further deplete.
CWI have relooked their entire approach to spending this year, with a number of changes to tournaments, leaving the outcome of this year’s shrunken Regional 4-day Championships being a key focal point, with the format being the stepping-stone towards players being drafted to the Test team.
