Salmin Kassim (L) and Guyanese Elton Dharry sharing a moment for the first time ahead of Saturday’s world title fight.
Kaieteur Sports – A fired up bevy of fighters laid their cards on the table yesterday ahead of Saturday’s upcoming International Boxing Organization (IBO)/Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) Fight Card hosted at the Pegasus Suites.
The final showdown ahead of tonight’s official weigh-in came in the form of a hyped up press conference hosted on Thursday at the old Pegasus hotel poolside area.
In attendance was GBBC boss Peter Abdool, Executive Joshua Abdool, Pegasus Director Brandon Badal, promoter Ceon Bristol, fighters Elton Dharry, Salmin Kassim, Desmond Amsterdam, Kevin Hilton, a number of persons from the respective camps which included coaches, trainers and former boxers.
The card’s main bout will feature Guyanese Dharry, squaring off against the 22-year-old Tanzanian African Kassim, putting his 10-0-2 record on the line in a bid to become his country’s first IBO Super Bantamweight World champion.

Arguably the most anticipated fight, Keevin Allicock (L) and Dexter Marques had a war of words back and forth exchange during yesterday’s press conference.
Kassim, through the translation of his coach said they were thankful for the invitation, stating “We have come from far, now we are here and we are ready for the fight on Saturday and the hands will talk.”
In his response Dharry, said he was thankful to God for allowing him to chase his goal. “Huge thanks to my opponent for coming but I will make sure he goes home empty handed. I’m here to be champ, this is not by accident, I’ve been doing it a long time and now it’s time to pull it off.”
Local sensation Desmond Amsterdam ahead of his fight said he appreciated the chance to fight and was happy that his opponent was ready, adding that, “I’m going to break your jaw, it wouldn’t be an easy walk in the ring.”
Jamaican Kevin Hitlon, who fought Guyanese Howard Eastman back in the days, urged the fans not to blink, telling Amsterdam that he does not have a glass jaw so he should enter this upcoming fight mentally prepared.
In arguably one of the biggest fights of the night, Keevin Alicock and Dexter Marques will have one of the more heated battles for the Featherweight title, as the two continued their pre-match banter ahead of their skirmish.
Marques referred to the Olympian as “little boy” on the come up and someone who he helped raise in the sport, promising to humble his younger opponent.
Not pulling any punches, Alicock reminded the crowd that he was the King of the Caribbean in boxing across multiple weight classes.
“I Fought my way out the ghetto, I’ve punched my way out the struggle, I was born to fight. This is the biggest fight in Marques’ career and you’ve got to have the heart of a lion and be willing to die in order to knock me out.”
Other matches carded for the fight included a Light weight 4 round match between Richard Howard Jr and Septon Barton.
