Defending Georgetown Guinness champs eliminated as Frontrunners Bent St, Gold is Money, Sparta Boss, Nat’l All Stars inch closer
Kaieteur Sports – The Cultural Centre tarmac came alive again on Thursday night as the Guinness “Greatest of the Street” competition narrowed its Georgetown field to eight quarterfinalists, delivering a cascade of high-stakes drama, shootout tension, and a few heavyweight casualties.
The round of sixteen kicked off with a marquee showdown that lived up to its billing. Star-studded Bent Street, long regarded as one of the most feared sides in street football, found themselves shackled by a resilient Z-Tekk outfit. When the final whistle blew on regulation time, the scoreboard read 0-0. But Bent Street’s pedigree shone through in the penalty shootout, where they clung to a nervy 2-1 victory to become the first team through to the quarterfinals.
Guinness Futsal action on Thursday night was competitive.
If Bent Street’s escape was tense, Leopold’s was a full-blown thriller. Locked at 1-1 after normal time against bitter rivals Albouystown, Leopold survived a marathon shootout that stretched to sudden death. When an Albouystown effort sailed past the goal, Leopold capitalized, sealing an 8-7 win to advance in what could only be described as a street classic.
Clean sheets were the order of the night elsewhere. New Bay Ballers tamed Team Cruel 1-0, while Island All Stars made a narrow 1-0 advantage stand up, sending Broad Street packing and inching closer to a national championship berth.
Festival City then produced a nail-biter against North East La Penitence, holding their nerve in a frantic 1-0 victory. La Penitence threw everything forward in search of an equalizer, but a barrage of shots was repelled by a stubborn North Ruimveldt defence.
The night’s most emphatic statement came from National All Stars, who brought the party to the Cultural Centre. They dismantled Team Immaculate 4-0, drilling four goals past a helpless defenders to cruise into the next round.
But the biggest shocks were saved for last. Defending champions, Laing Avenue felt the full force of Sparta Boss, who ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory to dump the titleholders out of the competition. And in the final match of the evening, crowd favorite Gold is Money delivered a well-controlled 3-0 masterclass to send East Coast All Stars home.
Quarterfinalists confirmed: Bent Street, Leopold, New Bay Ballers, Island All Stars, Festival City, National All Stars, Sparta Boss, Gold is Money.
Matches continued yesterday with the eight Georgetown heavyweights battling for semifinal’s berths.
