scored half-centuries against Trinidad and Tobago yesterday on the opening day of their sixth round Regional four-day game in Port-of-Spain.
Guyana, asked to bat first by the host at the Queens Park Oval, reached 260-6 by the close of play with Chanderpaul, who scored an unbeaten 119 in the last round against Barbados in his first match of the competition, ending the opening day unbeaten 21 runs away from his 62nd First-Class ton.
This was after fellow left-hander, 28-year-old Deonarine had been dismissed for 87 following up his 84 in the last round in Bridgetown. Guyana began badly when Shannon Gabriel removed make-shift opener Leon Johnson (6) with just eight runs on the board.
Debutant opener Chanderpaul Hemraj (29) and Assad Fudadin (24) added 36 for the second wicket before the South Americans lost the 18-year-old Hemraj, Fudadin and former Skipper and Test right-hander Ramnaresh Sarwan (6) to slip to 87-4.
Deonarine was joined by the 37-year-old Chanderpaul and together they featured in ‘operation rebuild’ by taking the score to 225 with attractive batting before Deonarine fell to left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh just when he seemed set for his 8th First-Class century.
Gabriel, who finished with 2-50 from 20 overs for the Twin Island Republic, quickly removed Guyana’s T20 Skipper Chris Barnwell for a duck to leave Guyana on 227-6.
Captain Chanderpaul, in his 279th match at this level remained to the end on a solid 79 and along with West Indies T20 Wicket-Keeper Derwin Christian, who finished unbeaten on 18, saw the Guyanese, second in the points table to the undefeated defending champions Jamaica, to the close without further loss.

Guyana, who beat the Leeward Islands, CCC, and Barbados, lost to Jamaica and the Windward Islands, batted 90 overs yesterday and will be looking for a total well in excess of 300 when play resumes at 10:00hrs today.
In the other matches, Barbados, led by 67 from former Test batsman Dwayne Smith, were 134-5 in Barbados after left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn (4-17) and Smith (3-39) had helped to dismiss the Leewards for 138.
And in Grenada CCC were 48-3 replying to the Windward’s 148.
