(Kaieteur News) – The Police in Region Seven are investigating the death of Moses Chapelle, called “Bizo,” who was fatally shot at Blackwater Backdam, Cuyuni River on Thursday night.
According to information provided by the police, the incident occurred around 21:30hrs.
Police said that preliminary investigations revealed that Chapelle had returned to Blackwater Landing with another man after visiting a mining operation in the backdam and the two were allegedly imbibing in the vicinity of a shop.
Reports are that while the men socialized a loud explosion, suspected to be a gunshot was heard. Chapelle reportedly fell to the ground at the shop and blood was observed on his back.
With the assistance of persons at the landing, the injured man was taken to the Puruni Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a medic. Police stated that his body was subsequently examined and a small circular wound was observed in the left lower back area.
Police in Region Seven visited the scene, where suspected bloodstains were seen on the ground, from which samples were collected.
“A 45-year-old gold miner of Company Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, was subsequently arrested and placed into custody,” the police revealed.
Meanwhile, Chapelle’s body was subsequently taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
