President Mohamed Irfaan Ali witnesses the signing of the GT3 De Las Americans agreement between the series Co-Ordinator Eduardo Aguilar Calderon (right) and Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) President Mohamed Shairaz Roshandin.
Kaieteur Sports – His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has cited the important role that sport tourism will play in building Guyana’s image in the time to come.
The president made the comments after witnessing the signing of the contract for the upcoming GT3 Americas Challenge.
Giving remarks, President Ali contended that there is much benefit to be derived from sport tourism and events such as the GT Challenge de las Américas, which are key pillars in showcasing Guyana.
“I’m very pleased today to witness another installment of us as a country building out our tourism product. As part of the orange economy and developing our tourism sector, sports tourism has been identified as one of the areas that we’ll pursue vigorously.”
He likened the challenge to the ‘CPL’ of motorsport, adding that Guyana will be on show to the world during the July event.
“We are hosting this as a CARICOM event. So, Guyana is the host, but we’ll be flying the CARICOM flag in this competition. So, we have an important stakeholder, of course, a well-known individual in the racing community in CARICOM, who will be driving from Trinidad, but he’ll be flying the CARICOM flag at these races,” President Ali said.
Eduardo Aguilar Calderon, the Organizer of the event, contended that the initiative represents a great positive for motorsport and the sport tourism brand here.
“I think it’s a very good opportunity for all to have an improvement in the motorsport racing in the Caribbean and Central America.”
Meanwhile, the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC), the local body and through whose auspices the event will run, has already begun a massive transformation project to the South Dakota Circuit.
With assistance from the government of Guyana, several infrastructure upgrades, including a revamped pit straight, FIA-spec curbing, and other safety mandates, are being installed at the Timehri facility.
Speaking also at the signing, GMR&SC president Mohamed Shiraz Roshandin added, “I’d like to thank the president first of all for seeing the vision of motor racing in Guyana and what it can bring for Guyana and also the upward trend of motor racing in Guyana; Eduardo and his team for seeing the vision and the strength of motor racing in the Caribbean and in Guyana and what the government has planned for motor racing.”
Franchise holder Franklyn Boodram explained the reason for choosing Guyana over his native Trinidad for the event, saying, “The reason that Guyana was chosen is because of the geographical location, direct flights, and availability, and the president and the support team were phenomenal. So, as the franchise holder of the GT Challenge of the Las Americas, this is going to be round three here in Guyana and the Caribbean, the CARICOM region, Latin, Central, and South America will definitely not want to miss this event.”
The July 12 and 13 event will bring drivers and teams from across the Latin American region to these shores for a historic moment of motorsport.
