(Kaieteur News) – Relatives, friends and well-wishers of Adriana Sueria Younge participated in a memorial service and walk in remembrance of the 11-year-old who died last year.
Adriana’s mother, Amecia Simon Younge, and her aunt, Amika Lewis, led a group of persons, including children clad in red jerseys, on a walk that lasted more than two hours to the Double Day International Hotel and Bar at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, the business establishment where the child went missing and was later found dead less than 24 hours later in the hotel’s pool.
The circumstances surrounding Adriana’s death have left many unanswered questions. Adriana, who resided at Hyde Park, Parika, died in April 2025 under conditions that continue to trouble both her family and the wider public. She was reported missing on April 23, 2025, during a family outing, and her body was discovered the following day.
While the mystery surrounding her death remains, relatives have chosen to honour her life through calls for justice.
Speaking with members of the media outside the hotel where Adriana’s body was found one year ago, her mother said through tears, “I’m trying but not good. Adriana still deserves justice, Adriana still deserves justice! Our family still needs justice and again she didn’t deserve any of this, she was innocent, she was humble and there is so much unanswered questions and we need justice.”
Her aunt, Amika Lewis, added, “It is a pain that certainly hasn’t died down it hasn’t gone anywhere it’s here, it’s fresh, reopened and we are still calling for justice.”
Lewis noted that the family is hoping the inquest recommended by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will lead to accountability. “We would like to see all those persons involved, all the persons responsible for Adriana’s murder we want to see justice, we want them to be brought to the court. We want them to face charges and we want them to face the hardest penalty that there is,” she said.
She further stressed, “I don’t think that anyone would want to live through and to relive what Amecia and Subryan have gone through and what this family has gone through.”
Meanwhile, the family’s attorney, Dr. Dexter Todd, told reporters that he wants the inquest to be televised. “I believe Guyana and the world needs to see the level of investigation which was done in this matter, and I think we are going to form a better opinion on the police performance in this investigation. I continue to say I’m not prejudging, but I continue to say that I believe that a lot of things are lacking in the investigative process in this matter, and I’ve been calling on even more employment of the use of forensic and other methods to better investigate this matter, and I’ll be able to see the shortcomings of that as it unfolds in the court,” he remarked.

Relatives, friends and well-wishers participated in a memorial service and walk in remembrance of Adriana Sueria Younge, on the anniversary of her death.
The eleven-year-old lost her life at the Double Day Hotel, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) on April 24, 2025. Her body was recovered in a pool of the popular EBE hotel hours after she went missing during an outing with family members.
An inquest is a public inquiry aimed at determining the facts related to a death, including the identity of the deceased, the cause of death, and the circumstances surrounding it. The inquest will be conducted by a Magistrate in the division where the incident occurred. The inquest will be held under the Coroner’s Act, allowing the Magistrate to call witnesses and examine evidence to ascertain the cause of death.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had previously stated that it is taking the necessary steps in keeping with the legal process for the inquest. The Police had also stated that it recognises the importance of public confidence in matters of this nature and remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, accountability and integrity in the execution of its duties.
According to reports, Younge was seen at approximately 13:01hrs on the day she disappeared. Her grandmother had reportedly observed her swimming in the hotel’s pool shortly before she went missing.
Despite immediate concern and searches, Adriana was not found until the following day—nearly 20 hours later—when her body was discovered in the same swimming pool. Reports indicated that her body was found in an upright position, raising serious concerns, particularly since the pool had reportedly been searched earlier.
A post-mortem examination conducted on April 28, 2025, by international pathologists determined that Adriana died as a result of drowning. However, the unusual circumstances surrounding the discovery of her body, combined with unanswered questions about the initial investigation, fuelled widespread public skepticism and outrage.
The case has since drawn both national and international attention, with many questioning the handling of the investigation by the GPF.
