Another disappointing night for Guyana despite Alesha Jackman’s successful debut
Guyana’s endured another disappointing night on Friday when night two of the National Cycling Velodrome in Couva, the 2019 Caribbean Boxing Championships commenced the evening in Central Trinidad despite Alesha Jackman’s success in her overseas debut.
Darren France lost to Daniel Sylvester of Grenada, while Richard Howard lost theTrinidadian Hosein Nyrell in what was deemed by the Guyana a blatant home town verdict.
“We protested that fight as it was the most blatant robbery ever seen. I had to lodge US$1000 in order for the protest to proceed. If we lose the protest the money gone,” lamented an angry Steve Ninvalle, President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).
The Howard, Nyrell fight was being reviewed yesterday evening.
In the lone success story of another night with controversial decisions was the encounter between Alesha Jackman and T&T’s Elias Sharika in the Youth Women’s Novices division.
The skilful Alesha, representing the 83,000 square Miles of Guyana and the Forgotten Youths Foundation in the heart of Albouystown, showcased her talent with a scintillating display in her overseas debut.
One of two females in the Guyana team; the other being her older sibling Abiola, Alesha came out with all guns blazing and stopped a stunned Sharika in the first with a flurry of punches in bunches.
Efforts to contact GBA Technical Director Terrence Poole and Manager of the team in Trinidad for a comment on the protest, proved futile.
The action was set continue last night. (Sean Devers)
