– Police, Soldiers clash for ISAAC title
Traditionally, police are trained to enforce the law while soldiers usually protect domestic affairs drawing a distinct line between their professional roles. In sport, that role could be applied to the already heated contest between the two armed services of Guyana.
The Inter-Services Annual Athletics Championships (ISAAC) has been a seesaw battle among an
enthusiastic Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and confident Guyana Police Force (GPF), which sets up an intriguing final day clash today for the coveted 2012 title.
The battle lines between the police and soldiers have been drawn, and are as distinct as ever with both teams aiming for the top prize at the Base Camp Ayangana Group. Officially, 9:00am has been set aside as the time when the forces will move against each other.
The Police enter today with a 33-point lead over the Soldiers, which is within striking distance of the Soldiers after the Police exhausted their trump cards in the field events where they are clearly stronger. The Soldiers, therefore, feel they have the advantage today.
The Police was hoping for a wider gap heading into the final day, but they did not get that bigger margin and will feel threatened as a result. However, they will seek to enforce their will today as a determined Defence Force attempts to defend their title, making for an interesting final contest today.
The Soldiers are depending on some big names in local athletics to ensure that the title stay at the Base Camp Ayangana. In the female 100m and 200m event, Letitia Myles is the GDF trump card with Leota Babb expected to represent the Police. Myles has been in sizzling form this year, but Babb is her senior and will definite be a force to reckon with.
In the male sprint races, Police’s Keith Roberts and Winston George will come against their foes, Quinse Clarke and Rupert Perry. The Defence Force will feel that they have the edge here again based on the head-to-head meetings with the
athletes.
Perry has run mind-boggling times this year, and once he continues that form today, he will be a handful in his races. The bottom-line is that the contest among the armed forces goes down to the wire with the Defence Force unleashing its strength.
Tiffany Smith should win the 400m women for the GDF while George has to contend with Patrick King among the men; the Police and Soldiers will hog the attention with the Guyana Fire Service and Guyana Prison Service basically out of the title competition.
