Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony has made a call for more football coaching to be done in the schools around Guyana. Dr. Anthony was at the time delivering the closing remarks at the FIFA/Guyana Football Federation MA Elite Coaches Course which ended at the Carifesta Sports Complex on Friday morning.
The group of 21 Coaches including 3 females was exposed to a high level of training on eth rudiments of the game by FIFA Accredited Instructor, Alvin Corneal of Trinidad and Tobago.

Dr. Frank Anthony accepts a gift from FIFA presented to him by Course facilitator, FIFA Instructor Alvin Corneal.
Dr. Anthony while making the call did acknowledge that some amount of work has been taking place in some schools but would like to see Coaches more active in the school system.
“I would like to see a comprehensive programme where every Region of this country must be involved in this sport. So if we work at this together we can make that difference. It is a very important thing but I think we have to work together and that’s where training like this would help. You now have the knowledge so that you can craft programmes and impart techniques to the young players and help to develop them.”
Coaches attending the Course were drawn from the GFF affiliated associations; Lethem, Essequibo, Bartica, Berbice, West Demerara, East Demerara, Upper Demerara, East bank and Georgetown.
Dr. Anthony reminded the gathering that sports today is scientific so understanding how to train an athlete is vital to gaining their optimum in a game situation.
“If you don’t give them the right frame of mind psychologically when they are going out for a game simple things like this would cause you to lose and I’m sure you would have covered a lot of those grounds during your course.”
Coaches were also told that the Ministry will set up two bodies that will deal with accreditation for officials and coaches to streamline and have a solid data base that deals with officials and coaches in all sports.
“Every year or two years you will be issued with a license because you would have gone through training in the various disciplines which allows you to stay current. Coaches must seek to constantly upgrade themselves.”
The participants were encouraged to work hard and aim high. Minister Anthony informed that the Government of Guyana has just signed a bilateral agreement with Brazil and one of the key pillars has to do with the development of football.
“We will be working with the government of Brazil in a number of areas related to football. So the GFF would benefit through this agreement but again we have to ensure that when we have offers of courses that we work with you to choose the best possible person to represent us. We already have one offer to send someone in November for an Elite Coaching Course in Brazil so we will be working with the Federation to choose that person.”
Not only the proficiency of the chosen individual would be looked at but also the track record with regards to the individual giving back by working with schools and the community.
“I think with the efforts between the Ministry, GFF and other partners we can make a tremendous difference in football but we to work and work hard and I’m sure that with other bilateral arrangements that we’ll be developing we would see more growth in sports in Guyana.”
