‘Sandy in, Dwight John out’ …as President sacks several REOs

Kaieteur Sports – Former APNU Vice Chairman Samuel Sandy has been named as the new Regional Executive Officer (REO) for Region 10 replacing Dwight John according to sources, following a meeting at the Office of the President on Wednesday.
The appointment Kaieteur News understands is part of a broader administrative reshuffle that also sees Mary Samaroo acting in the role of acting REO for Region 6. When reached for comment on the transition, the outgoing Region 6 REO, Narindra Persaud, told Kaieteur News, “I am unable to say.”

The new appointments were formalised during a session led by President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo. The meeting included Cabinet members, Permanent Secretaries, and officials from the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), where the President issued a stern mandate regarding the management of public funds. Addressing the incoming officers, President Ali emphasised that “sacred trust” accompanies public office. He warned that any breaches in procurement procedures, including involvement with multiple companies or circumventing transparency laws, would result in immediate removal from office.
The Government also announced it will now utilize artificial intelligence to actively monitor regional procurement processes and detect irregularities. Vice President Jagdeo reinforced this stance, stating that every expenditure must be strictly measured against its direct contribution to national development and citizen welfare.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed said the government’s decision to remove all ten regional executive officers is unprecedented and raises questions about political victimisation “and the lengths they go to with election gimmicks.” Mohamed said: “Never before in the history of Guyana has an administration moved every single REO at once, and the public deserves to know why.”
However, the opposition leader said, information reaching his office is that “these positions were quietly promised to individuals who crossed over and pledged political loyalty to the PPP ahead of the elections.”
Mohamed said: “At the end of the day, all of the REOs take instructions from Ministers. While the government continues to ignore the growing allegations of corruption surrounding several ministers and senior officials. If the PPP is truly concerned about accountability and good governance, why not remove the corrupt ministers instead of targeting REOs across the country,” the statement concluded.
