Kaieteur Sports – Thomas Dooley has resigned as Head Coach of Guyana’s senior men’s national football team, the Golden Jaguars, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure just eight months after taking charge of the programme.
Dooley, who arrived in Guyana in September 2025, succeeded Jamaal Shabazz, who had overseen the national programme before returning to club football with Slingerz FC and guiding the team to the GFF Elite League title in his first season.
The 65-year-old tactician reportedly informed players and staff of his decision yesterday, coinciding with his birthday, while offering no further explanation behind his resignation.
It is understood that the management of the Guyana Football Federation has already been made aware of his decision.
In a farewell message shared with players and team staff, Dooley expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Golden Jaguars and encouraged the squad to remain focused on future success.
“Dear players, dear staff, I want to let you know personally that I have made the decision to resign from my position as Head Coach of the Guyana National Team, effective immediately,” Dooley wrote.
“This was not an easy decision, because I have great respect for you as players and as people. I appreciate the commitment, effort, and trust you have shown during our time together.”
The former defender, who captained the United States at the international level and represented the country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, also praised the team’s commitment during his short spell in charge.
“I want to thank each of you for your hard work, your professionalism, and the pride you have shown in representing Guyana. It has been an honor to work with you and to be part of your journey,” the statement continued.
“Your journey is not over; it is just the beginning. Believe in you individually and as a team. Soon you will be back in Nation’s League A and back fighting for the Gold Cup.”
Dooley concluded by extending best wishes to the players and support staff as the programme moves forward.
“I wish you, the staff, and the team nothing but success moving forward. Keep believing in yourselves, keep pushing each other, and continue to represent the country with pride. Thank you again for everything.”
His departure now leaves the GFF facing another major decision regarding the direction of the senior men’s national programme, particularly with regional and international competitions looming on the horizon.
Dooley’s appointment last year had generated considerable interest, given his pedigree as a former international player and his coaching experience across Asia.
His arrival was viewed as part of the federation’s continued effort to strengthen the Golden Jaguars programme and restore Guyana’s standing within regional football.
However, after only eight months at the helm, his unexpected resignation leaves uncertainty surrounding the immediate future of the national team and the federation’s next move in identifying his successor.
