Six outstanding senior citizens with a combined service of 210 years to the development of Guyana was on Wednesday last rewarded by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club under its Annual Milton Armogan Memorial Tribute to Heroes Programme at the Annex Restaurant.
The programme, the 5th of its kind was hosted by the cricket teams of the club with the main aim of recognising and honouring outstanding senior citizens for their contributions towards national development and for being positive role models to youths.
The six Awardees are Desiree Benjamin (Education), George Johnnie (Security), Mohamed Mookshah (Education), Gordon Percival (Transportation), George Paddy (Water Sector) and Luke Beharry (Business).
Hilbert Foster, Secretary/CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club praised the Awardees for their commitment to the development of Rose Hall Town, Berbice and by extension, Guyana.
He described them as true Guyanese at heart and expressed gratitude to them for staying at home and most importantly working hard to develop our beloved homeland. Foster noted that Guyana needs all of its citizens to be committed to its development if we are to improve while issuing a call for the younger generation to emulate the passion, dedication and sacrifice of the Awardees.
The long serving Secretary/CEO urged the six heroes to share their vast experiences to youths and also to continue to work as age should not be a barrier.
Foster praised the cricket teams of the Club – Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23 and First Division and Metro Female for organising the events. Also singled out for praise was Mr. Lynden Armogan of the United States for his sponsorship in memory of his late father Milton Armogan who was a Member of Parliament and an outstanding Community Leader.
Mr. Alain Ramnauth, representing the sponsor congratulated and referred the Awardees as heroes. He said that they were all role models to him and his peers. Ramnauth also praised the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for their continued outstanding work in the Berbice area and said that it was a model to the other NGOs on how they can make positive differences in the lives of people.
He also disclosed that Mr. Armogan was proud to be associated with the Club and pledged his continued support. Captain of the Bakewell Second Division team Ravi Narine responded on behalf of the teams and stated that all players of the clubs were delighted to honour the six Awardees and also to follow in their footsteps.
Educator, Mohamed Mookshah who has over 35 years experience, expressed gratitude to the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and Lynden Armogan for recognising and honouring them.
He stated that he felt humbled to be rewarded by Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation. Mr. Mookshah pledged to continue working for the development of his country and to share his experiences with the younger generation.
Retired Headmistress, Desiree Benjamin noted that her educational career which spanned close to 40 years was most rewarding and if given the opportunity would do it all over again. She expressed pleasure that some of her former students were among those who were honouring her from the Club. Each of the Awardees received a Tribute to Heroes Certificate of Excellence and a collection of gifts.
The Tribute to Heroes Programme was the 85th of a targeted 125 Programme/Projects the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club has set for itself in 2011.
Upcoming programmes include the Busta 50 overs tournament, Ansa Mc al Twenty20, Zara Apartments Region 6 Educational Awards and the Patricia Moniz Memorial Educational Scholarships.
