The entire compliment of boxers scheduled to appear on this month end’s ProAm boxing extravaganza scheduled to appear at Abdool and Abdool Insurance Brokers, the Office of President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool, yesterday afternoon to consummate the deal by signing their respective contracts. For varying reasons, only a few turned up but this is certainly not indicative of what will transpire on the actual fight night.

Peter Abdool (2nd left) stands between two of the main principals in this month’s ProAm card, Kwesi Jones (extreme right) and Debbie Tyson (3rd right).
The standouts at yesterday’s ceremony was up and coming middleweight pugilist, Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones who pits his skill against former European Boxing champion, world rater and current middleweight champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman in a middleweight shindig. Also present were Pauline London and Debbie Tyson who battles for the second time in a light/heavyweight fight that is supposed to settle the issue once and for all, of who is the better boxer.
For the first time since the programme got underway, Mr. Abdool was present at the signing ceremony and maybe this is indicative of how special this card is. There were no brash comments or vitriolic exchanges and it seems as though the pugilists are intent on letting their fists do their talking. This assumption would be verified on Friday September 24, the day of reckoning.
The other fights that complete the card are, debutants, Simeion Hardy against Gavin ‘Hercules’ Williams in a junior/middleweight scrap while Clive Atwell, currently honing his skills in Antigua and Barbuda, will come up against the no nonsense Mark Austin in a lightweight bout. Initially, Atwell was to have fought Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers but the organizers have since made the relevant adjustment. Atwell is currently honing his skills in Antigua and Barbuda and is expected in Guyana soon.
The organizers are currently awaiting the list of amateur boxers expected to battle in that segment of the card. Whoever is selected, one thing is certain, the card would be qualitative since the boxers now realize that they are battling for big stakes.
Furniture Giants, Courts (Guyana) Inc has been in the forefront of activities in this segment of the programme and after each card doles out large food hampers to the principals involved.
In their last appearance, the boxers were pleasantly surprised to have received a gift voucher valued over ten thousand dollars to facilitate shopping of groceries at Bonny’s Supermarket, Church Street, Georgetown. With the intuitiveness of Marketing representative (Courts (Guyana) Inc), Pernell Cummings, they can be assured of lucrative rewards, all the better to enhance their respective performances.
The ProAm boxing card is the brainchild of Mr. Abdool and receives support from the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Communication Network (NCN) which broadcasts live action of the programme.
All boxers, coaches and other boxing affiliates enter free of cost and the organizers are appealing to the business community for support of the activity. The first bell rings at 20:00hrs sharp. (Michael Benjamin)
