National Coach of the female rugby team Alton Agard speaking with Kaieteur Sport during a training session at the National Park Tuesday, said that the squad is into the analytical and corrective phases, meaning, they are now identifying their weaknesses and trying to correct them.
Agard, who resides in the USA, returned to prepare the national female team for the upcoming North American & Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Championships which are scheduled to take place in Mexico from November 14-15.
“Judging from our last interview, we have come a long way in terms of fitness and I can tell you that that aspect of our preparations was closed last Thursday and we are now focusing on team plays and strategies along with correcting certain faults that we may detect during the sessions,” Agard told this newspaper.
Asked to identify a few of the weaknesses, Agard pointed out that he recognised that the players were losing the ball in contact situations, while they were also slow in defending the racks.
The Coach disclosed that that will be the concentration this week, while next week emphasis will be placed on team tactics using the starting line-up as well as how they were going to rotate the substitutes.
Agard said he is extremely pleased with the progress and commitment shown by the players, adding that it is regrettable that it is not a 15’s tournament that they are going to which would have compensated some of those players who failed to make the final squad, but displayed the dedication throughout the two months of preparations.
“I would have loved it to be a 15’s competition where we could have taken all of them because of the commitment and dedication that they’ve shown over the two months which is tremendous,” Agard said.
However, he felt that they are on target with regards to the programme that was devised and that he is pleased with.
Asked to compare this team with the one that won the regional title last year, Agard in response said that that is something that he does not like to do, but rather offered that this team is very capable of duplicating last year’s performance.
He mentioned the importance of retaining the title which according to him could provide the sort of infusion the sport sorely needs, especially for the development of female rugby not only here, but throughout the Caribbean.
The teams leave on November 14.
