2026 CWI Rising Stars U-19 50-Over Championships… Adams embracing new coaching role
– says maximizing abilities, getting players in right mind-frame key goals ahead of tournament

Kaieteur Sports – With the 2026 CWI Rising Stars Under-19 50-over season merely weeks away, new Guyana Assistant Coach Anthony Adams said he’s been settling into his role nicely, but more importantly praised his players for so far having a smooth gelling process coupled with some intense training as part of their pre-season camp.
New Guyana U19 Assistant Coach Anthony Adams is keen on bringing out the best in his young crop of players while using their journey as part of his own learning experience.
The Caribbean’s finest prospects will gather to compete in the regional 50-over format, acting as a crucial developmental pathway for young players which bowls off from July 7 to 23 in Antigua.
During his first interview as coach, the Level 11 facilitator told Kaieteur Sports, that upon entering this official chapter as coach, his goal is to maximize player’s abilities while helping the youngsters to identify their roles within the team.
“It is important for us as coaches to let them know what their role is and letting them know that this is the closest thing to them playing at the regional and international levels, because after this it’s senior cricket; but I think it’s going to take the right type of environment to help us maximize their abilities,” he explained.
The team has been doing much training and fine-tuning ahead of this year’s regional tournament, with the new coach pointing out that pre-season sessions are geared towards putting the team in the right mental space before action gets underway.
“The sessions that we have in Guyana, we’re going to try our best to get these guys motivated and to get them in the right frame of mind ahead of the competition.”
He continued, “We have to get these guys in a winning frame of mind, we cannot afford to okay catch up cricket when there is a points system, so we have to get them in the right space before they leave,” the coach pointed out.
The Guyana U19 squad has been gelling nicely together as they look to make a statement when the upcoming CWI 50-Over season gets underway.
Adams said his approach is based solely on ensuring that the relationship between himself and his players are close-knit, as he aims to harness the respective talents accordingly; during this new role.
“I’ve always approached each session with the highest expectations from each player because I want them to be comfortable while coaching so we can have better understanding. By communicating as a coach, I can better understand what these players need. I want to coach players based on their talent,” said the left-arm spinner.
At 33 and with one 1st class and one List A match under his belt, Adams said he is still keen on playing at the highest level but for the meantime plans to learn as much as he can during his new role.
“It is very important for me as someone who has the passion to still want to play the game at the highest level and to balance coaching with playing. Having said that I really appreciate coaching, I’ve learnt so much about myself from coaching others and putting it into my game.”
“Meeting different personalities, coaching different specialties after every session I do I always learn something I can put into my game; some of the things I may have not seen in my game I can see in others and take away the positives and put it into my game and my development.”
Wrapping up his interview, the Guyana Harpy Eagles player said he will be putting more into his coaching, following a solid start to the team’s preparatory pre-season camp.
“Camp started on the 6th and we had discussions with the players, everyone got a chance to introduce themselves and we’ve gotten feedback from the players to know what their expectations are going into this tournament. Everyone seems to be in good spirits, there is good camaraderie among the players and everyone has a positive approach,” he ended.
