…Diamond Jubilee Hockey Cup set to ignite National Stadium from June 11-15

Kaieteur Sports – The stage is set for a thrilling showcase of Guyana’s finest hockey talent as the Diamond Jubilee Hockey Cup gets underway today, June 11, at the National Stadium in Providence.

Organised by the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the tournament was initially formed as part of the nation’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations but unfortunately had to be reshuffled due to a busy sports schedule, will now run from June 11 through to June 15, culminating with the crowning of new Independence champions in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

The little rocket Jabari Lovell aims for a solid Independence Cup campaign ahead of tomorrow’s opening.

Originally scheduled for an earlier date, the tournament was adjusted to accommodate an action-packed sporting calendar during Guyana’s 60th Independence anniversary festivities. The revised schedule now promises five days of high-intensity competition featuring many of the country’s top players.

The opening night will feature the first two matches of the round-robin stage, with action set to begin at 6:00 p.m. before a second encounter takes center stage at 8:30 p.m. Teams will battle for valuable points throughout the preliminary phase, with the top two finishers advancing to the championship finals on June 15 for a chance to lift the coveted 2026 Independence First Division titles.

The men’s competition is expected to provide plenty of excitement from the opening whistle, boasting a roster filled with national standouts and emerging stars. Old Fort Top Form, GCC Elites, Hikers and Saints will be the first teams to take the pitch this Thursday.

Building on momentum, recent Most Valuable Player Omar Hopkinson enters the tournament carrying impressive form. He of course, will be among the key figures to watch in this tournament. Junior National Captain Shaquan Favorite is also expected to make his presence felt as he looks to guide his side through a highly competitive field.

Adding further firepower is Hikers’ dynamic playmaker Jamarj Assanah, whose speed, creativity and attacking flair have made him one of the game’s most electrifying talents. Saints Hockey Club’s speedster Jabari Lovell will also be a major attraction, bringing his trademark skill and composure to a tournament stacked with quality performers.

The women’s division is equally poised to deliver compelling action, especially after benefitting from the additional days used for preparation. Old Fort captain Carolyn Deane will spearhead her team’s challenge with the leadership and experience that have defined her career over the years, while reigning Most Valuable Player Abosaide Cadogan of GCC is expected to once again showcase her brilliance on the pitch that have earned her several individual honours.

Between the posts, Saints goalkeeper Sarah Harry will be tasked with anchoring her team’s defense. Widely regarded as one of the country’s premier shot-stoppers, Harry’s reflexes and command of the circle could prove decisive in the race for championship glory.

With national pride on the line and the last straw of Independence celebration to be concluded across the country, fans can expect an exciting blend of skill, speed and passion throughout the tournament.
