Kaieteur Sports – The inclement weather has forced a postponement of the New Amsterdam Inter Secondary School female Cricket competition which was slated to be during this month.
This is according to organiser and sponsor, overseas-based Guyanese, Petula Angela Samuels, aka Petal Samuels.
According to Samuels, she was determined to have the tournament played on the scheduled date. The competition was slated to be held from the 12th -14th June, at the Berbice High School (BHS) ground.
But the continuous rainfall has left the BHS ground in an impassable state. With more rainfall in the making, playing the competition during this month seems impossible.
She stated that the schools are in agreement to push back the tournament. The competition will be known as the Georgia Women Cricket Association- New Amsterdam Inter Secondary Schools Girls’ T10 Cricket Tournament.
The tournament has been rescheduled for September at the same venue. Attractive incentives will be awarded to the top teams and outstanding individual players.
Samuels, during her previous visits to Guyana met with Mayor of New Amsterdam, Wainwright Mc Intosh, representatives of the Ministry of Education and the schools.
The schools scheduled to participate were Berbice High School (BHS), Vrymans Erven Secondary School (VESS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS) and Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS).
Samuels has been inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame in Hartford, CT. She was also honored by the Georgia House of Representatives for her work in promoting youth and women’s cricket and was presented with a Resolution at a ceremony held at the Georgia State Capitol.
She was also presented with a proclamation by the Mayor of the City of Forest Park declaring March 8, 2016 as “Petula Samuels Day.”
She is the founder and president of Georgia Women Cricket Association (GWCA) and Atlanta Pearls Women’s Cricket team. She is certified Cricket Umpire and coach. (Samuel Whyte)
