Lusignan Golf Club continues to Champion Women’s Golf and encourage greater female participation
Kaieteur Sports – Golf has long been viewed as a sport that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together, and at the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC), significant efforts continue to be made to ensure that women have every opportunity to learn, play, and excel in the game.
The club is home to some of Guyana’s most accomplished female golfers, whose achievements have helped inspire a new generation of women and girls to pick up a golf club and discover the many benefits the sport has to offer.
Leading the way is Christine Sukhram, widely regarded as Guyana’s most successful female golfer. Playing off a handicap of 10, Sukhram has captured the Guyana Open title an incredible 14 times. Her success has extended beyond Guyana’s borders, with victories in tournaments across Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, New York, and Florida.
Throughout her career, Sukhram has demonstrated that dedication, discipline, and perseverance can lead to success at the highest levels. Her achievements continue to motivate aspiring golfers, particularly young women who may be considering taking up the sport for the first time.

Another standout figure is Dr. Joaan Deo, with a handicap of 14, Dr. Deo has enjoyed success both locally and internationally, including Guyana Open victories in 2014 and 2016 and the Suriname Open Championship in 2018, where she captured both the Gross and Net titles.
She also etched her name in local golfing history by recording a hole-in-one during the 2008 Ansa McAl Tournament, becoming the only female golfer to achieve that feat in the event’s history. Her accomplishments across numerous prestigious tournaments have earned her widespread respect throughout the golfing community.
Adding to Guyana’s growing list of female golfing stars is Shanella London, who currently plays off a handicap of 10. London has established herself as one of the country’s leading competitors, winning the Guyana Open four times.
Her achievements in Suriname have also been noteworthy. She became the first Guyanese woman to win the A-Flight Championship in 2016 and has gone on to secure multiple Suriname Open victories. Most recently, she delivered an outstanding performance at the 2025 Suriname Open, earning Best Gross Female honours and capturing the Longest Drive title on both tournament days.
While these golfers have reached impressive heights, Lusignan Golf Club believes that golf is not reserved for elite athletes. The club is actively encouraging more women and girls to get involved in the sport, emphasizing that golf is a game that can be learned and enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age or experience.
