Kaieteur Sports – Guyana failed to cross the line courtesy of some clinical Barbados bowling in a low-scoring skirmish, which resulted in them suffering a 22-run loss, as the Bajans booked their spot in this year’s Blaze T20 Championships.
The reigning champs desperately needed a win to help solidify a shot at going deeper in the tournament, which has just one final round left consisting of two qualifiers and a final.
After a drought during the first few games, spinner Kaysia Schultz finally showed her class with magical returns of 4-13, which spearheaded another top bowling performance by the champs.
Off-spinner Plaffianna Millington (1-21), Ashmini Munisar (1-15), Shabika Gajnabi (1-6) and medium-pacer Sheneta Grimmond (1-15), yet had brilliant spells.
Captain Aaliyah Alleyne who scored 38* (2×4) was the cornerstone behind Barbados’ meager 92-8 off 20 overs.
The Bajans then triggered a collapse, as Guyana found themselves 45-7 with just 5 overs left, resulting in a final score of 70.
Gajnabi tried her best to anchor the chase but no other player offered support, apart from Mandy Mangru (11) who was the only other double-digit scorer.
In the end, the West Indies player was left stranded on 41* (2×4 1×6), as Theanny Herbert-Mayers sliced through the Guyanese batting order to claim 3-16.
Fresh off a 5-fer, spinners Najanni Cumberbatch claimed 2-16, as pacer Shamilia Connell (1-6) bowled brilliantly, leg-spinner Kelia Elliot (2-21) and Captain Alleyne (2-11), assisted in put the finishing touches on their opponents with overs remaining.
Djenaba Joseph top-scored with 27 as Trinidad made just 76-8 from a revised allotment of 17 overs, batting first.
No other player got going, as the Jamaican veteran core featuring Stafanie Taylor (3-9), Vanessa Watts (2-13), Neisha-Ann Waisome (2-18) and Chedean Nation (-17) did the necessary damage.
Jamaica then finished on 79-7 in 15.2 overs, encountering a few hiccups but got home safely thanks to the senior duo of Nation and Taylor.
The former Windies skipper Taylor, hit a subtle 21 with 3 fours while the opener Nation scored 24 (3×4). Abigail Bryce scored a useful 12 as the Jamaicans got to their mark, despite some inroads from Trini leggy Brianna Harricharan (3-19).
Trinidad’s lethal spin attack nearly pulled off a heist, as Karishama Ramharack (2-13), Anisa Mohammed (1-15) and Samara Ramnath (1-19), returned brilliant figures despite the tough loss. (Clifton Ross)
