Kaieteur Sports – The Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym is eager to showcase its growing stable of young talent when the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Development Tournament takes centre stage today at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
The highly anticipated tournament, which begins at 5:00 pm, is expected to attract close to 60 boxers from gyms across Guyana, continuing the remarkable growth of the country’s amateur boxing programme.
Among the gyms expected to make a strong statement is the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym, whose Head Coach, James Walcott, believes his fighters are prepared to continue the gym’s impressive performances on the local developmental circuit.
According to Walcott, the Harpy Eagles Gym is expected to field a team of nearly 15 fighters for the tournament.
“We can have more, but I chose the ones that are ready at this point,” Walcott explained.
The coach noted that while several young boxers are progressing steadily within the programme, he remains committed to ensuring only fully prepared athletes enter the ring.
Walcott disclosed that preparations for the tournament have not been ideal due to ongoing reconstruction work at the gym’s Albouystown facility, coupled with persistent rainfall that has disrupted some training sessions.
“Training has been difficult because of the rain and the work taking place at the gym, but we still managed to put in a lot of work,” Walcott stated. “We’ve been able to do a lot of work, still, so I know the boxers are ready to come out and show what they’ve been working on with me.”
Despite the challenges, Walcott remains confident that his fighters will once again deliver strong performances, pointing to the consistent progress the gym has made throughout the year.
The Harpy Eagles coach highlighted that his gym has already captured two Development Tournament titles this year, while also finishing runners-up on two occasions.
Walcott himself was also recognised as Best Coach at one of the tournaments, achievements he believes reflect the dedication of both the coaches and fighters within the programme.
“We’ve been doing well this year, and that’s because the fighters are staying committed and disciplined,” Walcott said. “The tournaments are helping them grow in confidence and experience every time they step into the ring.”
Walcott also praised the Guyana Boxing Association’s decision to move the developmental tournaments to the National Gymnasium, noting that the larger venue allows for increased participation and provides a better overall atmosphere for both athletes and supporters.
“It’s definitely a good move,” Walcott noted. “More gyms are participating now, and the National Gymnasium gives the tournament a much better setting. It creates a bigger atmosphere for the young fighters and gives them a feel of competing on a larger stage.”
The broader Development Tournament continues to grow from strength to strength, with GBA National Coach Lennox Daniels revealing that this weekend’s edition has already attracted close to 60 boxers from gyms across the country.
Among the gyms expected to field sizeable contingents are the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Gym, Pace and Power Boxing Gym, Rose Hall Jammers, New Amsterdam Boxing Academy, Police Boxing Gym, and Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym.
Daniels explained that the Development Tournament has become one of the most critical pillars in Guyana’s boxing structure, giving young fighters invaluable ring experience while simultaneously allowing coaches and selectors to identify emerging talent.
Daniels further praised the Guyana Boxing Association for establishing a structured pathway for aspiring boxers, adding that the developmental system has significantly elevated the standard of local boxing.
The steady emergence of talent from gyms across Guyana has strengthened the national programme considerably, the GBA stated, with selectors now enjoying a deeper pool of fighters to monitor and nurture.
