Kaieteur Sports – Preparations are continuing in the New Amsterdam Inter Secondary School female Cricket competition despite the continuous inclement weather. This is according to organiser and sponsor, overseas-based Guyanese, Petula Angela Samuels, aka Petal Samuels. According to Samuels, who is a Hall of famer and awardee in the USA, despite the weather, things are going according to plans and she is certain that everything will be in place for the competition. The competition will be known as the Georgia Women Cricket Association- New Amsterdam Inter Secondary Schools Girls’ T10 Cricket Tournament.
The competition will be held from the 12th -14th June. All matches will be played at the Berbice High School ground beginning at 09:00 hrs. The final is set for the 14th beginning at 15:00 hrs. Attractive incentives will be awarded to the top teams and outstanding individual players.
Samuels is expected to be in Guyana shortly to meet with the teams and finalize arrangements for the tournament.
Samuels, during her previous visits met with Mayor of New Amsterdam, Wainwright Mc Intosh, representatives of the Ministry of Education and the schools. She also put together a local committee, headed by Mayor Mc Intosh that is assisting in the organising of the tournament.
She is the founder and president of Georgia Women Cricket Association (GWCA) and Atlanta Pearls Women’s Cricket team. Apart from playing the game, she is certified Cricket Umpire and coach. Over the years she has organised cricket development camps, coaching clinics and tournaments in the USA and plans to do the same here.
She has been inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame in Hartford, CT. She was also honored by the Georgia House of Representatives for her work in promoting youth and women’s cricket and was presented with a Resolution at a ceremony held at the Georgia State Capitol.
Samuels was also presented with a proclamation by the Mayor of the City of Forest Park declaring March 8, 2016 as “Petula Samuels Day.”
