Independence Cycling event successfully staged in Berbice

Kaieteur Sports – The Independence cycling event organised by the Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam in collaboration with the Flying Aces Cycle Club FACC was successfully held.

The two-lap event was held around the town of New Amsterdam in observance of Guyana’s 60th Independence anniversary.

New Amsterdam Mayor Wainwright Mc Intosh was prominent among the more than two dozen participants, which included senior cyclists Franco Crawford and Clement Doris and veteran athlete Errol Rose, among others. A number of juveniles on their mountain bikes and BMX bicycles also participated.

The event was coordinated by founder and President of the FACC and veteran Cycling Coach Randolph Roberts.

The participants pedaled off from the junction of Charles Place and Republic Road outside Rainbow Bar. They proceed along Republic Road through Winkle, turned left into North Road, left onto Main Street, proceed through New Amsterdam and Stanleytown to Tacama, turned left onto Republic Road and past the starting point. The event ended at the Esplanade Play Park at the Junction of Esplanade and Vryheid Road.

The participants were addressed by Mayor Mc Intosh, Deputy Mayor Kirk Fraser, Councillor Polly Ann Schultz and Coordinator Randolph Roberts.

The lone female participant, 10 year-old Kathleena Doris from West Berbice was given a token of appreciation from Councillor Schultz. Veteran athlete Errol Rose was also commended for participating.

The event was powered by Banks DIH limited through their Powerade brand, Mayor Mc Intosh and others. Thanks were also expressed to the Guyana Police Force. (Samuel Whyte)
