Kaieteur Sports – There will be a new Demerara zone champion in the Future Warriors Tapeball tournament after a clinical, all-round display from Chateau Margot Primary dumped defending champions Grove Primary out of the competition on a rain-affected but ultimately rewarding opening day at the National Stadium.

While inclement weather battered the majority of Region Four on Saturday, the Providence venue’s superior drainage infrastructure again came to the fore.

The moment the rain dissipated, the ground was presented in pristine condition to welcome 16 primary school teams for the Demerara leg of the ExxonMobil Guyana-powered tournament. By stumps, a day defined by high-quality, budding talent left just four teams standing: Chateau Margot, Stella Maris, West Ruimveldt, and Rama Krishna.

The headline act of the quarter-finals belonged to Chateau Margot, who executed a flawless chase to unseat the title holders.

Part of the action on day one of the Demerara zone at the National Stadium, Providence.

Grove Primary, opting to bat, put up a competitive 53 for 3 from their allocation of eight overs, anchored by a solid 22 from Anderson Peters. However, the East Coast Demerara outfit showed no sign of big-stage nerves. They aced the chase with an over to spare, reaching 54 for 4 on the back of a captain’s knock from Brandon Billey, whose unbeaten 14-ball 22 sealed an emphatic victory.

Chateau Margot’s reward is a semi-final clash against inaugural champions Stella Maris Primary, who kept their hunt for a second title alive with a gritty 13-run win over Enterprise Primary. Defending a modest 46 for 6, built around Delmar Mansell’s 17, Stella Maris choked Enterprise’s chase, restricting them to 33 for 5.

Jared Joseph proved to be the game-changer with the ball, bagging 2 for 6 in his solitary over.

On the other side of the draw, West Ruimveldt Primary stormed into the final four with a dominant performance against School of the Nations.

A brisk, unbeaten 21 from Steven Orie, well-supported by Jermaine Tracey’s 18, propelled West Ruimveldt to a formidable 61 for 2. School of the Nations never got going in reply, stalled at 39 for 3 when the overs ran out.

West Ruimveldt will face Rama Krishna Primary, who produced the most lopsided victory of the afternoon. Powered by Shiv Singh’s fluent, 15-ball 21 not out, Rama Krishna posted an imposing 60 for 1 before their bowlers completely dismantled Comenius Primary, routing them for just 21 for 7 in a comprehensive bowling display.

The tournament, which also featured spirited participation from Camille’s Academy, Supply Primary, La Grange Primary, ISA Islamic Primary, Meten-Meer-Zorg, Winfer Gardens, St. Pius, and Redeemer Primary, moves into its business end on Sunday morning.

The semi-finals are scheduled to bowl off at 10:30h, followed immediately by the third-place playoff and the final. At stake, beyond the immediate silverware and individual accolades, is a coveted spot in the Champion of Champions final.

The Demerara winners will eventually clash with the zone champions from Berbice—who play at the Albion Sports Complex on June 13-14—and Essequibo, whose leg takes place at the Anna Regina National Stadium on June 20-21.
