The Beharry Group and tournament facilitators Petra Organization, officially launched the School’s Under-19 Cricket Tournament.
Kaieteur Sports – The Beharry Group of Companies yesterday broke new ground as they officially launched their nationwide School’s Under-19 Cricket Tournament, geared towards teaching core values and building characters through sports.
Facilitated by the Petra Organization, the tournament will look to revamp a key part of Guyana’s rich cricket history by targeting the grassroots levels in a widespread system which is projected to produce more nationals and international ambassadors for the future of Guyana and West Indies cricket.
The competition is set to bowl off in the early part of June with still one eye on the weather as some 8 zones with a number of teams representing them, across the country; will battle.

Beharry Chief Marketing Officer Malissa Sylvester and Petra Executive Troy Peters signing bats to commemorate the launch of the historic School’s Under-19 Cricket Tournament.
Elite zones knockout leg followed by each zone having national representation, will then see the 8 top Schools being broken into 2 groups based on Net Run-Rate ahead of the national finals set for Anna Regina.
Representative of the Ministry of Education through their Allied Arts Unit, Karishma Ramnauth, said the tournament was needed as it helps build character among other traits at the Secondary School levels, further thanking Beharry for their sponsorship while wishing the teams well.
Meanwhile Chief Marketing Officer within Beharry Group of Companies- Ms. Malissa Sylvester, welcomed those in attendance to the official launch of the tourney, citing that the aim is to ensure the tournament is among Guyana’s premier youth events.
She said cricket nurtures future leaders and helps build character, adding that the story has been less about business and more about contribution to national development by virtue of sports which plays a critical role by instilling qualities like discipline, leadership, perseverance and other quality values.
Sylvester added that those same values make athletes who they are and that’s why the tournament is more about investment in character, as cricket remains in a special place locally and is a huge part of Guyana’s national identity.
In closing, she believed that this tournament will help young people to further compete and represent their schools, thus reminding the youngsters that they’re still organizations out there who will continue to help and develop them for the future.
Their known ability having organised schools’ football at various age levels, and their relationship with the sponsors, who also support the Petra Schools football tournaments, Petra has been roped in to lend their organising acumen to ensure a smooth run of the tournament. Over the years, the principals behind Petra, Troy Mendonca and Marlon Cole, have shown their ability to successfully organise events at the school level, hence the confidence of the sponsors in having them on board.
