Kaieteur Sports – Following the announcement that former Guyana and West Indies Cricket team captain, Sir Clive Lloyd, has been elected as Lancashire’s new president as part of a restructure of the club board, Statistician Charwayne Walker has revealed that this move is associated with several firsts achieved by personnel from the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC).
Walker stated that, Sir Clive’s achievement at Lancashire is a Caribbean first since he is the first player from the region to become president of an English County Championship Club.
Walker explained that DCC’s Lance Gibbs was the first bowler to capture 300 Test wickets, Sir Clive was the first captain to lift the ICC World Cup twice, 1975 and 1979.
DCC’s Roy Fredericks was the first West Indies batsman to score a One Day International (ODI) century, 103 vs England at Oval in 1973 and he also became the first sitting government minister to register a double century in first class cricket, 203 vs Jamaica in 1983 at the GCC, Bourda.
Maurice Fernandes, who also played for the famous Queenstown Club, was the first West Indies captain to win a test match, notes Walker, and now Demerara Cricket Club’s Sir Clive Lloyd has added another accolade to the club, being chosen as the president of Lancashire Cricket Club as this house of legends scores another important first.
