Kaieteur sports – Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Football team, the Golden Jaguars suffered a painstaking loss on Friday night against Nicaragua when the two sides met in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers at the Nicaragua National Football Stadium, Managua.
Jaguars lost 1 – 0 to the home team in the 2nd round, Group D battle, which further solidified Nicaragua’s chance of progression while ultimately ending Guyana’s campaign, as they both entered the showdown in must-win situations. Jaime Moreno’s 41st-minute goal became the decider at regulation time.
Nicaragua leads with nine points from three consecutive wins, Panama is second with six points from two wins in as many matches, Guyana and Montserrat both have three points but the former is ahead on a superior goal difference while Belize is in the cellar after conceding three consecutive losses.
The mighty Panamanian team was billed to face Belize on Saturday evening – a shot that can guarantee them the lead in the Group, with each team left with a match to play in the round.
Only the group winners move on to the final round of Concacaf qualifiers, where they’ll join the three lowest-ranked teams from the Nations League A and the winners of Nations League B, vying for the region’s three automatic spots at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, the Golden Jaguars, are scheduled to take on Montserrat on Tuesday, June 10 at Guyana’s National Track and Field Centre at Edinburgh, West Coast Demerara, from 20:00 hrs.
Jags will indeed be looking to secure a victory after they opened their qualifiers with a 2 – 0 loss to regional heavyweights Panama at the Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez, rebounded by defeating Belize 3–1 at the Wildey Turf in Barbados and suffering their most recent defeat.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to feature 48 teams for the first time in history, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, raising the stakes even higher for nations like Guyana looking to make their debut on football’s grandest stage.
