SportsMax – Despite half-centuries from the returning Sherfane Rutherford and Gudakesh Motie, England handed the West Indies a comprehensive seven-wicket loss to complete a 3-0 sweep of their One-Day International Series at The Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday.
After losing the toss and being put in to bat, the West Indian innings was halted after 15 overs due to rain, eventually leading to the match being reduced to 40 overs per side.
In their 40 overs, the West Indies posted a respectable 251-9, recovering from being 121-6 in the 22nd over.
The main reasons for that recovery was a 33-run seventh-wicket partnership between Rutherford and Motie and then a 91-run stand for the eighth wicket between Motie and Alzarri Joseph.
Rutherford, who missed the first two ODIs while representing the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, top scored with 70 off 71 balls including nine fours and two sixes while Motie made 63 off 54 balls including five fours and three sixes.
Joseph provided some excitement towards the end of the innings with 41 off 29 balls including five fours and two sixes.
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid was the pick of the English bowlers with 3-40 from his eight overs while pacers Saqib Mahmood, Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts all took two wickets, each.
Facing a revised target of 246, the hosts then made light work of the chase, using only 29.4 overs to reach 246-3.
Openers Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett were the stars of the show with half-centuries.
Smith hit 10 fours and three sixes on his way to a 28-ball 64 while Duckett made 58 off 46 balls including five fours and three sixes.
Joe Root and Jos Buttler also got close to fifties of their own with 44 and 41*, respectively, while skipper Harry Brook finished not out on 26 alongside Buttler in the end.
The two teams will now turn their attention to the three-match T20I series beginning on Friday at Chester-Le-Street.
Scores: England 246 for 3 (Smith 64, Duckett 58, Root 44, Buttler 41*) beat West Indies 251 for 9 (Rutherford 70, Motie 63, Rashid 3-40) by seven wickets (via DLS method).
