Kaieteur Sports – Windies women’s skipper Hayley Matthews nailed a match-winning half-century to hurt the home team Ireland yesterday in the ongoing Women’s T20 Tri-Series.
Ireland were steamrolled batting first at home in Dublin, falling for 103 all out in 17 overs with skipper Orla Prendergast (25) and Leah Paul (21) the only two to withstand the mixed Windies attack.
Left-arm spinner Qiana Joseph (3-8) alongside Jahzara Claxton (2-9) and Zaida James (2-10), were unstoppable for the Windies ladies; who raced to 104-2 inside 12 overs after a brilliant half-century from their skipper.
The opener punched 11 fours and 3 sixes in her 44-ball 82 not out which set the tone for what resulted in an easy chase for the Windies.
Veteran all-rounder and former Captain Stafane Taylor (10*) aided Matthews in the chase as the two saw their team home despite Irish pacer Ava Canning bagging 2-16 as her other teammates returned wicket-less.
Table-leaders Windies will look to keep their streak going today when they face off against the ladies of Pakistan. (Clifton Ross)
