Kaieteur Sports- In a landmark partnership aimed at safeguarding the future of youth football, Demerara Mutual Life Insurance Company has officially partnered with the Petra Organisation to provide comprehensive insurance coverage for players and staff across all Petra tournaments in the 2025 season.
The agreement, formalized on Tuesday at the company’s Robb and Avenue of the Republic location, marks the first time a local sports body has secured this level of insurance protection, an important move aligning with international standards for athlete safety and welfare.

“This is a historic moment,” noted Petra Co-Director Troy Mendonca during the official presentation. “We at Petra are extremely delighted by this remarkable development, which will not only enhance the quality of our tournaments but also improve the overall welfare of our players. This insurance package perfectly aligns with Petra’s mission to provide a safe and secure environment to all involved.”
The Petra Organisation, well-known for hosting local and international youth teams, particularly in rural and urban communities will now operate under a framework that places player protection front and center.
This initiative comes just ahead of the highly anticipated ExxonMobil Boys’ and Girls’ Under-14 Football Championship set to kick off on Saturday, June 14. A total of 52 teams including 32 boys’ and 24 girls’ squads will compete in what is expected to be one of the most talent-rich and structured youth tournaments in the country.
The 2025 championship will feature;18 teams from Georgetown, six teams each from the East Coast and Region 3, four teams each from Regions 2, 4 (East Bank), 5, and 6 and another two teams each from Regions 1, 7, and 10.
Speaking at the event, Demerara Mutual Sales and Marketing Coordinator Oceola Van Doimen praised Petra’s efforts, noting the insurance company’s excitement to support the growth and safety of youth football in Guyana.

With its guiding slogan, “Protecting What Matters Most,” Demerara Mutual’s involvement not only raises the bar locally but also sets a potential international precedent in youth sports safety.
The ExxonMobil U14 Football Championship will be the first Petra tournament to benefit from this groundbreaking insurance coverage, meanwhile with just over a week away, the tournament is poised for an electrifying start.
