Guyana impress but edged out 5-4 by England at O45 Indoor Hockey World Cup

Team Guyana celebrate their second-place finish at the Over-45 Men’s Indoor Hockey World Cup.

Kaieteur Sports – In the final of the Men’s Over-45 Indoor Hockey World Cup, held in Nottingham, England narrowly edged Guyana 5-4 to take the title.

Guyana had an impressive unbeaten streak leading up to the final, securing victories in the group stage against Canada (10-2) and Wales (6-5), as well as a notable 7-4 win against England.

In the semi-finals, Guyana clinched a hard-fought 3-2 victory over France, courtesy of a brace from team Captain Jerazeno Bell and a lone goal from Allan Fernandes.

In the final, Devin Hooper opened the scoring for Guyana with a field goal eight minutes into the contest, giving them a 1-0 lead.

However, Andy Langland responded strongly for England, netting two of his five goals before the end of the first half, leaving the score at 2-1 in favour of England.

As the second half commenced, Dwayne Scott showcased his skill with a hat-trick (at minutes 31, 35, and 36), propelling Guyana to a 4-2 lead as the clock ticked away.

Langland concluded his remarkable performance with a ‘glut’ of five goals, scoring three consecutive goals.

He struck first in the 37th minute from a penalty corner, followed by back-to-back field goals in the 38th and 40th minutes.

As a result, Guyana had to settle for second place, while Germany, France, and Wales completed the top three positions.

Australia secured the sixth position, followed by Bangladesh in seventh place. Alliance and Canada occupied the eighth and ninth positions, respectively, in the tournament. (Rawle Toney)
