Guyana Jaguars chased leather all day yesterday in sweltering heat at Providence as the Leewards Hurricanes batted out the entire penultimate day of their CWI’s Regional First-Class seventh round encounter with Monchin Hodge and Amit Jangoo just missing out on centuries, while Jahmar Hamilton made 68.
Hodge, who fell for 98 from 373 ball and 419 minutes with nine fours and Jangoo, who faced 250 balls and for 300 minutes in 90 which was decorated with 10 fours a six, added 171 for the third wicket after Ross Powell was dismissed at 40-2 on Friday.
Jahmar Hamilton faced 75 balls and batted from 115 minutes. He hit 10 fours and a six in his 68 and put together 80 with Terrence Ward (21) for the seventh wickets as the Hurricanes reached 355-7 by the end of the penultimate day enjoying a lead of 94 runs.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Persaud had 3-91 to move to 48 scalps for the tournament and Left-arm seamer Raymon Reifer, who had 2-67 were the five-times defending Champions’ best bowlers yesterday.
The Jaguars, led by 90 from Vishaul Singh had made 261 all out in 107 overs in their first innings.
On a day blessed with glorious sunshine and clear blue skies, a small gathering saw the Hurricanes overnight pair of Hodge and Trinidadian Jangoo bat out the entire first session with little worry on a slow, flat track to score 88 runs in two and half hours.
The 32-year-old Hodge reached his half-century first; his 30th fifty at this level came from 280 balls, 275 minutes with six boundaries as he and Jangoo had no real problems against an unpentrative attack.
The 22-year-old left-handed Jangoo swept 20-year-old off spinner Kevin Sinclair for four to post his seventh first-class fifty from 178 balls, 186 minutes with six boundaries as the pair continued to bat in positive fashion.
Jangoo took a liking to Sinclair, who bowled in limited overs mode and rarely looked threatening.
Insisting on bowling from around the wicket to the left-hander and plagued by no-ball issues, Sinclair was hit over his head and lofted over mid-four for a four and a six by Jangoo, while Hodge was the more watchful of the two as they batted to Lunch with the Hurricanes on 161-2.
After the interval, Jangoo danced into Sinclair and thumped him over mid-off for four and when the second new ball was taken, flicked Christopher Barnwell for four, while Anguillan Hodge stroked a bullet-like drive back past Smith’s ankles for four.
Hodge was let off on 68 with the score on 189-2 when wicket-keeper Anthony Bramble dropped a difficult leg-side offering off Smith, diving full length to his left.
The partnership was finally broken when Permaul trapped Jangoo LBW 10 short of his maiden ton.
Keacy Carty deposited Permaul for a straight six before he was taken at slip off of Reifer for a cameo 22 from 20 balls with three fours and a six to leave the visitors on 251-4 at Tea.
After Tea, Hodge and Jahmar Hamilton resumed and Hodge smashed Reifer past cover and edged him to third-man for consecutive boundaries.
The pair give their team a first innings lead, but with the score on 266-4 with a slim five runs lead, Hodge played a loose shot with not much movement of the left foot across and nicked a catch to Bramble to fall just two short of what would have been his fifth First-Class hundred to leave the Hurricanes on 266-5.
Hamilton and Terrence Ward added another frustrating partnership in the last season as Hamilton, who dominated the stand, scored freely and reached his 24th 50 and fourth for the season from 68 balls, 107 minutes with nine fours before he missed a big swipe at Permaul and was bowled at 348-6.
Motie removed ward at 348 before Rahkeem Cornwall (1) and Jerimiah Louis (6) saw their team to the close.
Today is the final day and play is scheduled to commence at 09:30 hrs.
Scores: JAGUARS 261 (Vishaul Singh 90, Raymon Reifer 43, Leon Johnson 35; Jeremiah Louis 4-49, Rahkeem Cornwall 4-95).
HURRICANES 355 for seven (Montcin Hodge 98, Amir Jangoo 90, Jahmar Hamilton 67 not out; Veerasammy Permaul 3-91, Raymon Reifer 2-67).
