The change in zones scheduling has made the Georgetown leg of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ phenomenon the most eagerly anticipated event in street football. Following a decision by the Organisers to place the Georgetown leg at the back of the annual calendar has worked up both fans and teams to such frenzy that tonight’s commencement of seven nights of pulsating action should enjoy a massive turnout.
With prize monies topping the $1million mark, fans can expect to see teams battling hard for survival during the opening two nights play which has knockout implications. Losers over the two nights will have to wait until next yar to have a crack at the whopping first prize of $500,000, bragging rights and an automatic berth in the national playoffs slated to start one week after this zone’s completion.
The second place team will receive $300,000 and trophy, while third and fourth placed finishers will take home $200,000 and $100,000 respectively. Also up for grabs again will be $100,000 for winner of the Plate section which will be competed for involving the losing quarter-finalists.
The tournament which is celebrating its 10th year of existence will additionally offer giveaways for fans so there are incentives to be present at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac for opening night action.
Action in the competition resumes tomorrow evening with matches scheduled for the Burnham Basketball Court. The Organisers have implored teams to be on time for a prompt start at 19:00 hrs so as to facilitate the completion of games in good time.
Also, fans and players are being asked to continue to exhibit the good behaviour that has been exemplary throughout the tournament’s history. Meanwhile, the fixtures for the two nights are as follows: National Cultural Centre Tarmac – Trap Squad versus LA Ballers, Upsetters vs. Albouystown A, North Ruimveldt vs. John Street, California Square vs. Alexander Village, North East La Penitence vs. Stabroek Ballers, Norton Street vs. Back Circle, Sparta Boss vs. Judgement Yard, Gold is Money vs. Globe Yard.
Burnham Court – Rising Stars vs. Good over Evil, Ol Skool Ballers vs. Sophia, Albouystown B vs. Berlin, Kingston vs. Broad Street, Bent Street vs. Charlotte Street, Future Stars vs. Sophia United, Leopold Street vs. Pike Street, Queen Street (Tiger Bay) vs. Smyth Street.
