The quest to make it to the semifinals of the GFF/Stag Super 16 2018/2019 edition will commence this evening at the Golden Grove Ground where the first two quarter finals matches will be contested.
Fans, supporters and followers from the City and East Coast will be in for high level entertainment when home team Ann’s Grove tangle with City side Western Tigers in the first match of the night at 18:30hrs.
To cap off the Christmas Night action would be defending champions Guyana Defence Force throwing down the gauntlet to fellow Elite League team, Buxton United.
Tomorrow at the Leonora Track and Field Facility, the remaining two quarter finals would be contested. Reigning Elite League Champions Fruta Conquerors, aiming to unseat the Army, will take on Upper Demerara’s Milerock in the first game at 18:00hrs with the feature clash on Boxing Night between West Demerara’s Den Amstel and East Demerara’s Victoria Kings.
What all the teams have in common at this stage is that they have all been victorious in crossing their respective first hurdles. The final two round of 16 matches were contested on Sunday night last at the Leonora Track and Field Facility Ground where Milerock were led by elder statesman Rawle Gittens who netted both goals (11th, 78th) in their 2-0 win over West Demerara’s Eagles of Stewartville.
The final round-of-16 match produced a humdinger of a battle between Den Amstel and Santos and needed extra time to decide the winner after a fierce 1-1 tie in regulation time. The home side enjoyed lots of possession and while they created numerous chances they were miserable in the final third.
It was Santos that took the lead in the 53rd minute after a goalless opening 45 minutes. Sunil Logan decided that he had had enough and stuck one past custodian Jermaine Cumberbatch.
Even up that point Den Amstel were the team that were enjoying the better of the exchanges but had difficulty in finishing. But they finally got it right in the 77th when Gavin Graham found the back of the nets to ease and release loads of pressure that was building up not only among the players but amongst their fellow villagers and supporters.
And it was back to the drought after the equalizer came as neither team were able to get the go ahead goal. Den Amstel were all over Santos but the art of finishing was distant from their repertoire of plays and shots in the attacking third. Thirty minutes of extra time was required to decide the winner of the contest.
Andre Hector became the hero for the home team when he rocked the nets in the 105th minute to seal the win and their place in the quarter finals where again they will play the final match of the round of eight against Victoria Kings tomorrow night at the same venue.
But all the final eight action will start to unfold from tonight at the Golden Grove Ground and then over on the West Side tomorrow evening. The respective winners will advance to the semifinals which would be contested on Friday at Leonora.
The grand finale will be on New Year’s night, January 1st 2019 at the GFC Ground.
