The World Council of Dominoes Federation Inc 18th championships will be on at the Carifesta Sports Complex Georgetown commencing with an opening ceremony tomorrow from 17:00hrs.
Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, St. Lucia and The United States of America will join host Guyana in the tournament which will be contested in the three-hand mix pairs, female and male pairs as well as the four-hand mix pairs, female and male pairs. Guyana is the male three-hand defending champions.
The Guyana team which had a practice session last night at Transport Sports Club reads; male- Godfrey Samuels (C), Kevin Boston, Rawle Peters, Gilbert Mendonca, Theon Ambrose, Errol Seymour, Troy Baksh, Kemecy Brandis, Eon James, Shawn McKenzie, Kurt Caesar, Terrace Pollard, Quincy Adams, Bruce Goodman and Wendell Campbell (manager). Females- Claire Benjamin (C), Yonette Christmas, Barbara Marshall, Andreia Marks, Sheron Jerome, Faye Joseph, Alexis McAulay, Alverene Jaundoo, June Watts, Shellon Nichelson, Karen Narville, Marcie Solomon and Nicola October.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport last night Secretary General of the World Council Dominoes Federation Inc Gregory Blenman of
Barbados said the tournament is important since it is their 25th anniversary and they are looking forward to get more countries involved. He added that St. Lucia and Barbados are strong in the four-hand, while Guyana have been world champions in the male department for the past two years.
He expressed confidence that the tournament will be exciting and successful noting that the preparations are well underway and commended Guyana for their efforts.
President of the Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA) Faye Joseph said she is confident Guyana will excel at the championships. The Guyana team is being sponsored by Impressions, Target Hardware, Caricom General Insurance Company Inc and Jennifer Westford.
Guyana Oil Company, Demerara Distillers Ltd under their El Dorado brand and Ministry of Social Cohesion Department of Culture, Youth and Sports are the tournament sponsors.
