Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana rugby community is in mourning following the passing of former player, coach, administrator, and Treasurer of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, Troy Yhip.
Yhip, a well-known sports enthusiast and stalwart of the game, died on Monday after a prolonged battle, sending shockwaves across the local and regional rugby fraternity. Revered for his tireless commitment, he was more than just an administrator—he was a driving force behind the rugby’s survival and growth in Guyana.
A devoted husband, father, and friend, Yhip’s contribution to rugby extended far beyond the field. From personally soliciting sponsorships to ensuring teams had transportation, accommodation, and logistical support, he consistently went above and beyond. His hands-on approach and willingness to serve made him indispensable to the rugby community.
Those who worked alongside him recall a man of remarkable generosity and resolve. “He was always willing to assist, whether organising transport, securing accommodation, or even stepping in as a team manager. He made sure every player and every tournament ran smoothly,” members of the union shared.
Affectionately dubbed “the Mayor of Georgetown” by peers, Yhip had an unmatched ability to get things done. If he couldn’t solve a problem himself, he knew someone who could. For many, he was the person who never said no.
During his playing days with Yamaha Caribs, Yhip defied expectations. Though solidly built, he was agile and dynamic on the field, often outmaneuvering opponents and playing key roles in his team’s successes. His passion for rugby never waned, transitioning seamlessly into coaching and administration where he continued to shape the sport.
In a statement, the GRFU expressed deep sorrow: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Troy Yhip, a former player, Youth Development Officer, coach, and Treasurer. He played an integral role in the growth and development of rugby in Guyana. His dedication and passion left a lasting impact on players and the wider rugby community.”
Tributes have poured in from former and current players, administrators, and regional partners, including close friends at Trinidad Enthusiasts Rugby Football Club, all honouring a man whose influence stretched well beyond Guyana’s borders.
Condolences are extended to his wife, children, family, friends, and the entire rugby fraternity during this difficult time.
