Kaieteur Sports – Thirty junior cricketers of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club last week enjoyed a one day tour to the Garden city and also region three. The visit was organised by the club management in conjunction with the Trendsetter Tour Group with sponsorship from the Riaz Computer Store.
Players on the tour were selected from the Rose Hall Town Poonai Pharmacy under11, 13 teams along with the Rose Hall Town Farfan and Mendes Ltd Under16 team.
The excited group was accompanied by Club Secretary Hilbert Foster, Cricket Manager Robby Kissoonlall, Asst Cricket Manager Tyrone Pottaya and under19 players Danellie Manns and Nicholas Cameron. Places visited included the seawalls area, the Red House, National Cricket Stadium, the Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Farfan and Mendes Head Office, Ministry of Housing and the newly opened Guyana-China Friendship park in West Demerara. They were also taken on a bus ride around the city at popular venues like the St George Cathedral and Stabroek Market.
Club Secretary Hilbert Foster stated that one of the main aims of the city tour was to educate the youths on the developments taking place in their homeland.
The boys were privileged to meet former President of Guyana, Donald Ramoutar, during their visit to the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre. The former Guyana leader traced the valved contribution of Dr Jagan to the country’s fight for independence and overall development.
President Ramoutar also urged the attentive youths to develop a culture of respect and discipline. RHTYSC Honorary Patron, Minister of Housing Collin Croal in a one hour meeting with the teams spoke widely of the importance of an educational background. Minister Croal answered a wide range of questions from the players and then donated six junior cricket kits to the club for its developmental programmes. Organising Secretary Robby Kissoonlall expressed thanks to the Honorary Patron for his assistance and pledged to use the equipment for the intended purpose of unearthing more talents for the future.
The youths also visited the head offices of their sponsor Farfan and Mendes Ltd, where General Manager Andrew Mendes expressed his delight to host them. Mr Mendes congratulated the team on representing his company brand well over the years and cautioned them on the misuse of illegal drugs and alcohol. The tour ended with a visit to the Seven Ponds area in the Gardens where several outstanding Guyanese are buried including three Presidents, national poet Martin Carter and Sir Sonny Ramphal.
The management of the club would like to express thanks to the Ministry Of Tourism, Trendsetter Tours and Riaz Computer Store for the roles in making the visit a success. The club intends to make more of these visits in the future in their ongoing personal development programme for its youth cricketers.
