Banks DIH Limited, Nand Persaud, Benjamin Sports and Republic Bank on board
As action day draws nearer a hoard of sponsors led by Beverage Giants Banks DIH Limited, Nand Persaud Group of Companies through its Karibee Rice Brand, Republic Bank Guyana Limited and Benjamin Sports of Fyrish Corentyne, Berbice among others have quickly jumped on board for the staging the first ever Port Mourant Family Fun day and Gymkhana.
The much talked about activity which is organised by the Sha’veh Business Enterprise of Portuguese Quarters Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice in association with the People of Port Mourant is slated for Sunday 5th February at the Port Mourant Turf Club, Corentyne Berbice.
Other major sponsors on board so far are Jumbo Jet, Colin Elcock Delmor Company, Associated Construction, Lewison General Store, Top Branz Enterprise, Kris Jagdeo Construction, Poonai Pharmacy, Shariff Business Enterprise and Annirude Construction.
Music will be supplied by Guyana biggest sound system, the Might Crown Vibes International Sound Company.
According to organiser Mr. Sha’veh, the activity is done with the people of Port Mourant in mind and in observance of the Mashramani Celebrations. He said that the Turf Club was a gift from the British to the people of Port Mourant area. So the mega event is being done to bring the people back to the venue which was once the mecca of activities in the Corentyne area.
He feels that it is fitting to do something especially around this Mashramani time that would involve as much persons as possible.
Cycling and Horse cart racing have been added to the multitude of activities planned for the day which will be highlighted by the horseracing events. Also on the days programme are donkey racing, climbing the greasy pole, catching the greasy pig, catching the fowl cock, Bun eating, bag and dog races and Gymnastics among other novelty events. There are also flat races involving the top athletics clubs in Berbice.
Horses are expected to take part in events such as the H and Lower over 6 ½ Furlongs gallop for a winning purse of $200,000, the race for J and Lower animals, three Years old Guyana Bred non winners race, events for K and Lower, L and Lower and L class non winners.
In an effort to involve everyone, the organisers have included two special events. The first is for the horses classified J, K and L that participated during the day but did not win or place.
The other event is for horses that would have never raced on a race track in Guyana or the Cow or Cart horses.
