The history books would have already recorded for posterity the tremendous support given to the Guyana Amazon Warriors during the Guyana leg of the inaugural Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) cricket competition which ended in grand style at the Guyana National Stadium on Sunday night last.
While the Guyana team suffered its first loss in their three home matches due to inconsistent batting, Captain Ramnaresh ‘Ronnie’ Sarwan, his charges and Management Team couldn’t ask for more from the faithful home fans whose massive turn out on all three days was heartwarming.
There is no doubt that it will be tough for any other Caribbean territory to match the level of support and the high level of consistent energy displayed by the Guyanese fans for their team. The atmosphere was wonderful, the crowd colourful and hyped; fans came from all three Counties and the massive crowds also included our neighbours from Suriname and Brazil, displaying their country flags in support of the Amazon Warriors.
Age did not matter; even moms and dads with babies were seen in the stands taking in the action.
The message that this level of support sent to the world was that sports will continue to be a unifying factor for any nation. Race, colour, religion nor political persuasion was far from the thoughts and physique of those present at the Stadium; what mattered was that the Guyana Amazon Warriors succeeded in the task at hand.
They {Amazon Warriors} tried their best, defeating Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel and Jamaica Tallawahs before going down to the St. Lucia Zouks by 5 wickets. Despite the loss, the Guyanese fans were satisfied that they were part of history and gave their all in terms of support for their team.
Of course there were thousands more who could not have been accommodated at the stadium due to its capacity but they were all glued to their television sets at home sending out positive vibes to their Warriors.
The high level of professionalism displayed by the Volunteers who controlled the seating arrangements in the stands was admirable. Congratulations are also in order for the other persons who would have contributed towards making this leg of the LCPL a resounding success.
Like every other thing, I am sure there would have been some glitches here and there which can be ironed out next time around. The MC (Chowpow) did a fine job too and the world would have seen and felt what we {Guyanese} as a sporting nation can do. Hip Hip Hip! Hooray.
