GCA’s Queensway Cup 50-over cricket
Action in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Queensway Cup 50-over cricket competition is scheduled to continue today with the staging of the final first round match at the Everest ground.
Malteenoes Sports Club battle Third Class from 09:30hrs for a place in the second round of the knock-out competition, while tomorrow GYO, who beat GDF in their first round match, battle GNIC tomorrow at Everest in the first second round encounter.
After heavy mid-week rain, the sun was out yesterday and chairman of the GCA Competitions committee, Shawn Massiah, said that up to yesterday afternoon the Everest ground was in a playable condition. He added that the Police ground was unavailable due to another activity while most of the other grounds in the city were still too soggy from the heavy rain.
Police, who pounded Vikings to reach 358-8 off 43 overs in a rain-hit clash, has the highest total so far.
Cayman Islands Stanford t20 player Shaheed Mohamed, who had the impressive figures of 7-3-5-4 for GYO against GDF with his off-spin before hitting an unbeaten half-century in the same match, has been the outstanding player of the competition so far.
The emphasis of competition is to develop quality players for Demerara, Guyana and the West Indies and especially to unearth new fast bowling talent.
At a time when the very core of Guyana’s cricketing future is under threat, Queensway’s CEO Mohamed Qualander says reviving Guyana’s cricket is not a one-man or one-party show.
“It is imperative that everyone, especially the players and administrators work together and stop all the controversy which is badly affecting the cricket both on and off the field.
“We also have a problem with fast bowlers which was the strength of the West Indies team when we dominated the world. I fully share the GCA’s vision in trying to focus on fast bowling talent and I have put up a special prize for the best fast bowler in the competition. There is also a prize for the best bowler but the one for the fast bowler is different and the aim is to inspire great performances from the pacers. A TV, Carpet, cricket gear and finance form the fast bowler’s prize,” Qualander explained.
Qualander said cricket is a part of the fabric of this nation and an important aspect of Guyana’s identity.
“Cricket produced great memories for me and I am delighted to be a part of this competition. We had great coverage last year and we expect the Media to do even better this year as they not only give the Company coverage but the players who do well,” the businessman. (Sean Devers)
