(Kaieteur News) – An Upper Berbice River man was on Thursday handed an 18-year jail term by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Berbice High Court.
Maxton Walker, a tractor operator, was indicted for the offence of murder contrary to common law.
On March 18, 2024, Walker chopped 36-year-old Marcus Adrian. Investigations revealed that Walker and Adrian were friends, both of whom resided in the community of Hururu Mission, Upper Berbice River. Adrian was a logger who frequently collaborated with Walker.
Police said that on the day in question, Walker and Adrian were consuming alcohol when an argument arose. This then escalated to a scuffle. Reports are that Walker pushed Adrian to the ground, and chopped him several times. The victim, after sustaining chop wounds to his neck and face, attempted to escape but collapsed along a trail. His body was later discovered in a puddle of blood.
He was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Village Toshao subsequently intercepted Walker and handed him over to the police.
State prosecutor Marisa Edwards summarised the particulars of the offence before the court, while Walker sat visibly resigned and remorseful. Attorney Charlyn Artiga represented him.
On Thursday, the attorney asked that the court temper justice with mercy, as her client was genuinely remorseful for the act. At the start of the trial on April 14, Walter acknowledged the facts before Justice Ramlall. He accepted responsibility for his actions while noting that his guilt was free from external influences.
Walter will be eligible for parole only after he serves a minimum of 15 years in prison.
