Sparta Boss, Back Circle, Bent St ‘A’ and ‘B’ advance to quarterfinal round
‘Stars among Stars’ Futsal Championship
Kaieteur Sports – Bent Street stamped its authority on the ‘Stars Among Stars’ Futsal Competition on Wednesday night, securing two coveted quarterfinal berths as both its ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams recorded commanding victories at the National Gymnasium.
Joining them in the final eight were Back Circle and Sparta Boss, who also produced dominant performances in the round-of-16 clashes as the tournament completed its first set of quarterfinal qualifiers.
Bent Street takes two spots in quarterfinals phase, as ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams secured separate round of 16 wins on Wednesday.
In front of an energetic crowd, Bent Street ‘B’ became the first team to book a quarterfinal place after crushing Leopold Street 8-2 in a ruthless display. The emphatic victory served as sweet redemption for Bent Street following disappointing outings in previous street-ball tournaments.
Back Circle then delivered one of the night’s most clinical performances, overwhelming Kingston 8-1. A disciplined defensive effort kept Kingston scoreless for most of the encounter before a late consolation goal. However, Back Circle remained firmly in control and sealed the lopsided win with a couple strikes near the end.
Bent Street ‘A’ maintained the street franchise’s impressive run by dismantling rivals Laing Avenue 6-0. Displaying sharp finishing and relentless attacking play, Bent Street dominated from start to finish to secure another comfortable passage into the quarterfinal stage.
Meanwhile, Sparta Boss completed the night’s list of qualifiers with a 5-2 triumph over East Coast All Stars. Despite a spirited effort from the East Coast side, Sparta Boss relied on its experience and composure to pull away and confirm its place in the next round.
The competition continues tonight and tomorrow at the National Gymnasium as organisers seek to complete the quarterfinal lineup.
Teams are battling for more than $4 million in cash and prizes, with the champions set to pocket $1.5 million. The runner-up will receive $700,000, while the third and fourth-place finishers will take home $400,000 and $200,000 respectively.
The tournament is being supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through its ‘One Guyana’ initiative.
