Guyana’s Powerlifters created history when they won for the first time the overall team championship at the 4th International Powerlifting Federation /North American Powerlifting Federation /Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships concluded at the Princess Hotel on Saturday.
History was also created with Guyana hosting the prestigious competition for the first time. To add to the overall honour, defending overall male champion, Randolph Morgan successfully retained his crown while ‘Big’ John Edwards was again the overall Masters Champion.
Guyana amassed a total 69 points way ahead of Trinidad and Tobago who placed 2nd with 38 points followed by US Virgin Islands (24), Cayman Islands and USA 17 each with Puerto Rico ending at the bottom on 12.
The female team championship went to Trinidad and Tobago for the first time; they accumulated 15 points, 3 more than Puerto Rico with US Virgin Islands tallying 9.
Morgan’s total using the Wilks Points system it was reported, was the highest ever achieved in the Caribbean Championships, 540.2.
Edwards won the Masters with a total of 494.93. Taking the overall Male Junior award was Puerto Rico’s Ramon Burgos while his countrywoman, Migdalia Fernandez claimed the Female Open Champion trophy. The Female Masters trophy went to the USVI’s Paula Smith.
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony received a plaque from Secretary General of the North American Powerlifting Federation Robert Keeler for his contributions to the development of the sport.
Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation President Peter Green was also honoured with an award of excellence for accepting the challenge of hosting what has been described as a successful history making championships.
