Kaieteur Sports – The stage is now set for the return of competitive football in the mining town of Linden, and plans are going well for the staging of this year’s Linden Town Week football championship using the inter ward teams.
The six wards were handed the rules for the tournament where queries were made last Friday at the tournament venue, Bayrock National Stadium, where Co-Director of the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation, Kashif Muhammed, outlined their plans as coordinators of this championship, which will be in association with the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA).
Muhammed told the gathering of coaches, players and team managers; “we want the rich legacy that is in Linden (football) that has been for years to come back.”

Ward representatives display uniform tops as UDFA’s PRO Ms. Reycia Nedd and K & S Kashif Muhammad lift the winners’ trophy after the presentation last Friday at the Bayrock National Stadium.
The dates for this tournament, which is being staged during the Linden Town Week celebrations, are Friday, 24th April, the first of four playing days, Monday 27th April, with semifinals set for Wednesday 29th April with the final billed for Friday, 1st May. This tournament is being played at the just completed Bayrock National Stadium in Wismar, Linden.
Muhammed, the long-time football promoter, noted that his K & S Organisation began in 1989 promoting football in the town of Linden, but “we left Linden because we did not have the right facilities. Now we have the Mackenzie Sports Club and Bayrock facilities. So, we will be returning with football on both the Mackenzie and Wismar shores.”
He highlighted that there are only two wards from the Mackenzie side of Linden, and the four others are from the west of Linden. Muhammed’s suggestion to add one other ward from the four to make it three from the Mackenzie shore from an open draw, was accepted by the majority of the wards present.
Present at the presentation was the UDFA’s PRO Ms. Reycia Nedd who thanked the K & S Organisation for partnering with the UDFA to have the return of football to Linden.
She indicated that the K & S Organisation will also be working on helping with more sponsorship for the UDFA, which they appreciated, and are looking forward to future collaboration towards the promotion of this popular sport back in the mining town of Linden.
Ms. Nedd added that once completed, the Mackenzie Sports Club ground with the Bayrock facility will be used for tournaments such as the UDFA league, which is set for September and will continue to the end of this year.
The three wards therefore in Group A that will play each other to see which will advance to the final are Central Mackenzie / South Mackenzie/ Mines, Amelia’s Ward/ Kara Kara/, and One Mile/ Half Mile/ Scheme, with Group B having Block 22/ Scheme, Blueberry Hill/ Alleys/ Valleys/ Christianburg, and the other is Silvertown/ West Watooka /Canvas City.
The rules for this inter-ward competition were read to all the ward representatives and queries were addressed accordingly.
The uniforms along with two balls each for teams, compliments of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, were presented to the six ward managers, with the understanding that after the tournament is completed, they will be return the uniforms to the UDFA, for use in future tournaments, where uniforms could be a challenge for teams.
