Kaieteur News – A 56-year-old man is in critical condition after a powerful gas explosion ripped through his East Ruimveldt home early Sunday morning, leaving the structure partially collapsed and trapping occupants beneath debris.
The injured man has been identified as Troy Alleyne, a father of three and resident of Pineapple Street and Front Road, East Ruimveldt.
The incident occurred around 02:00hrs.
According to information received, Alleyne’s wife said she awoke to a strong smell of gas and alerted her husband. He reportedly went outside to the lower flat of the house to investigate a 100-pound gas cylinder that was installed at the property.
It was during this time that a loud explosion occurred, followed by screams, causing the eastern side of the building to collapse and catch fire.
Residents of the community responded swiftly and assisted in rescuing the occupants from the debris. Alleyne was later rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with severe burns. His condition is listed as critical. His wife and tenants were also rescued from the structure.
The Guyana Fire Service responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze. The area was subsequently processed by police ranks, and CCTV footage from nearby locations is expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate the explosion occurred shortly after the smell of gas was detected, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
Investigations are ongoing.
