Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) is set to ignite the local basketball scene today (Sunday) with its highly anticipated National 3×3 Championship, scheduled to tip off from 2:00 pm at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
A total of 10 teams will battle for top honours in what promises to be an exciting and competitive showcase of the fast-paced format. At stake is a lucrative prize pool, with the champions set to walk away with $300,000, while second and third place finishers will earn $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
The tournament will feature a structured format designed to maximise competition and entertainment.
Teams have been divided into two groups of five, with each group engaging in round-robin play. Following the preliminary phase, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
The winners of those matchups will then progress to the final, where the inaugural champion of the event will be crowned.
Beyond the immediate competition, the championship carries significant importance for the development of the sport locally.
According to GBF Vice President Rawle Toney, the event forms a critical part of Guyana’s preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Guyana is set to make its historic debut in 3×3 basketball at the Games, which will be held in Glasgow. As such, today’s championship provides a valuable platform for players to showcase their talent, gain competitive experience, and position themselves for national selection.
