Cecil Cox amassed 11 1/2 points and eventually captured the Junior National Chess Champion when that tournament concluded at the Olympic House, Peter Rose and Church Streets, Queenstown over the past weekend.
The young chess player’s level of play was of an exceptionally high standard to the extent that he started the final two rounds needing only a draw to solidify his position. He signaled his intention from his first game against Kana Khan with a resounding victory. Despite dropping an earlier game to Crystal Khan, and despite registering three draws, Cox rebounded to claim the title earlier vacated by Taffin Khan.
Cox assumed the lead in round eight after defeating pre-tournament favourite, Saeed Ali in round eight. Crystal Khan demonstrated remarkable consistency and defeated Ali in round thirteen. One round later, he secured a win over Rashad Hussain to eventually finish in second place with ten points. Sham Khan scored 9 1/2 to finish third while Saeed Ali had to settle for fourth place after scoring 9 points.
The final points standing: Cecil Cox (11 1/2 points), Crystal Khan (10 points), Sham Khan (9 ½ points), Saeed Ali (9 points) nine, Rashad Hussain (5 points ), Raan Motilall and Kana Khan (4 1/2 points each) Stanley Ming Jr, who withdrew from the tournament due to personal commitments after round four (1 point).
Earlier in the tournament, Wendell Meusa had already claimed the top prize even before the final round had commenced. Taffin Khan and Ronuel Greenidge then staged a ferocious battle for the second podium spot. The situation became even more intriguing with both players tied on 8 points apiece with still two games to go.
Khan won his encounter against Learie Webster, while Thompson held Greenidge to a draw in round thirteen. Khan entered the final round with a slight advantage after winning his penultimate game. Greenidge then assumed the lead after defeating Omar Shariff while Khan, faced with an uphill against former national champion, Kriskal Persaud, dropped his final game. The final points standing is: Wendell Meusa (13 ½ points), Ronuel Greenidge (9 1/2), Taffin Khan (9), Kriskal Persaud (7), Omar Shariff (6), LearieWebster (5), Brian Thompson (4) and Chino Chung (2).
The presentation of prizes will take place on Friday November 20, at a venue to be announced.
